Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Career Development Specialist for a full-time continuing opportunity with our Career Services department. You will be responsible for the development and delivery of accessible, responsive and relevant career advising services and resources to students, alumni and program areas of MacEwan University.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising students and alumni in career planning/management, CV writing, resume/cover letter writing, effective work search strategies, interview preparation and follow up;
- Conducting intensive one-to-one career advising sessions with students by appointment virtually, in-person or by phone;
- Consulting, debriefing, and providing expert advice to staff, faculty or volunteers on issues related to career development;
- Conducting career assessments for prospective students, alumni, community members or current students according to the requirements of certification for each assessment including the MBTI or Strong Interest Inventory;
- Responding to career related questions and referring students and alumni to appropriate information, resources and services;
- Researching and maintaining up-to-date information on occupational, educational, and labour market trends, including graduate and professional school admissions and evolving employer expectations in hiring processes;
- Researching and leading the creation, development and evaluation of innovative programming initiatives in career education/career development including career development services, materials, workshops, online resources and other resources;
- Consulting and collaborating with other academic departments on career education initiatives that support their programs;
- Taking an active role in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of events that contribute to the career planning process, including career fairs, graduate school fair, and discipline-specific events, working with other departments as required to develop these events; and
- Supporting recruitment, training, and daily support of student staff and volunteers, including mentoring and coaching on job search skills, resumes/CVs, interviews, LinkedIn, and professional communication, while developing and maintaining training materials.

- The ability to present to diverse groups and engage each audience including students, alumni, faculty, staff, employers and community partners;
- The ability to demonstrate tact and empathy in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills;
- Strong initiative and the ability to work collaboratively in a professional manner as a competent and accountable member of a dynamic, student-focused team;
- The interest and ability to develop initiatives to engage students in their own career planning process;
- Knowledge about current career development theory;
- The ability to develop, maintain and evaluate effective initiatives and work processes and procedures is an asset;
- Solid computer skills, social media knowledge and the ability to learn new software applications;
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree and the Career Development Association of Alberta CCDP Certification or a similar certification.
- A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience working in a career centre - advising, developing career information and resources for clients, and facilitating workshops or seminars.
- Experience with Career Management software and with the development of online resources using Teams and Zoom.
- Working in a student-oriented, service role within a post-secondary institution would be considered an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
