Position Overview:
Reporting to the Deputy Chief - Community Risk Reduction, the Regional FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating FireSmart activities within the Bow Valley region, including the Town of Canmore, the MD of Bighorn, and the Kananaskis Improvement District. This role focuses on reducing wildfire risk and increasing community resilience by supporting the implementation of Alberta’s Community Wildfire Risk Management Cycle and the FireSmart system. The coordinator facilitates the development, execution, and ongoing management of FireSmart initiatives within the communities in their region.
Core Accountabilities:
- Competently performs project management, grant application, presentations to staff and communities, and other related tasks
- Proficiently and efficiently uses computer operating systems, software, and applications such as MS Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Joomla, etc.
- Follows established standard operating procedures for safety and customer service
- Maintains confidentiality of all client information
- Anticipates sensitive issues and plans an appropriate strategy
Educate and Empower Communities:
- Coordinate FireSmart public education within the region, engaging with each community.
- Organize/participate in events, including Wildfire Community Preparedness Days, emergency preparedness days, farmer’s markets, local sporting events, school presentations, and trade shows to distribute FireSmart information.
- Facilitate community FireSmart education sessions (e.g., FireSmart program information presentations, Neighbourhood Champion workshops, etc.)
- Recruit, supervisor, coordinate, and provide FireSmart training for the Advanced Home Assessment and Neighbourhood Recognition Programs to build local capacity.
- Coordinate the completion of Advance FireSmart Home Assessments.
Improve Wildfire Response
- Update or develop community wildfire mitigation strategies and implementation plans
- Prepare annual progress reports on wildfire mitigation strategy implementation
- Coordinate the completion of Neighbourhood Wildfire Hazard Assessments
- Review and update Wildfire Preparedness Guides and Emergency Plans annually
- Plan and coordinate a minimum of one cross-training exercise per year with Alberta Forestry and/or mutual aid partners
Collaborate and Coordinate:
- Review resource sharing and mutual aid agreements between jurisdictions (e.g., local, provincial government, Indigenous rights holders, etc.) annually
- Establish and Chair Community FireSmart Committees that meet at a minimum quarterly to coordinate the holistic implementation of the Wildfire Mitigation Strategy
- Prepare and maintain terms of reference for each FireSmart Committee
Reduce Wildfire Risk
- Prior to and during development planning stages, work with communities to provide for wildfire resilience in legislation, bylaws, plans, policies and development standards
- Work with community planning departments during development phases to encourage design, construction and renovation standards that consider wildfire resilience
- Prepare or update the 5-year community vegetation management maintenance schedule
- Organize, plan, and participate in community vegetation management projects. Oversee external vegetation management contracts.

Coordinates with the Communications Advisor in each community on creating internal, external, and public communications related to FireSmart activities

Seeks and administers new FireSmart grant opportunities and on-going initiatives and projects.

Performs other FireSmart-specific duties as assigned/required.
Education & Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in a related field such as Forestry, Emergency Management, Biology, Land Use Planning, or Public Safety –asset
Experience:
-
Experience in fire prevention or FireSmart education programs – required
-
Two years’ experience working in wildfire, structure fire, emergency management, forestry, or a combination of these – required
-
Wildland firefighting experience with knowledge in fire ecology, fire behaviour, and prescribed fire techniques – asset
-
Familiarity with the FireSmart Community Wildfire Risk Management Cycle and the FireSmart system - preferred

Experience in project management – preferred
-
Wildland-Urban Interface Member training, or willing to attain – required
-
Level 1 – FireSmart Ambassador designation, or willing to attain – required
-
Level 2 – Neighbourhood Recognition Program Specialist designation, or willing to attain – required

Level 3 – Home Ignition Zone Specialist designation, or willing to attain - required
-
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft office programs (particularly Excel), with the ability to independently create and edit a variety of documents and spreadsheets – required

Strong oral and written communication in English, including both written and public speaking abilities – required

Organizational habits to understand, realistically plan for and meet deadlines, while adapting to changing demands and priorities – required
