Located approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, NHH delivers a broad range of acute, post-acute, outpatient and diagnostic services. Acute services include emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical care and palliative care. Post-acute specialty services (PASS) include restorative care and rehabilitation. Mental health care, cancer and supportive care, dialysis and other ambulatory care clinics are offered on an outpatient basis through partnerships with regional centres and nearby specialists. NHH offers a full range of diagnostic services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and mammography. The hospital serves the catchment area of west Northumberland County. A mixed urban and rural population of approximately 67,000 residents, west Northumberland comprises the Town of Cobourg, the Municipality of Port Hope, Alderville First Nation and the townships of Hamilton, Cramahe and Alnwick/Haldimand. NHH employs more than 850 people and relies on the additional support provided by physicians, midwives and volunteers. ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Manager, Northumberland Hills Hospital Community Mental Health; the Mental Health Therapist is responsible for the provision of primarily therapy based mental health services to individuals and groups with a serious mental illness. Tasks such as service navigation, case management and community engagement will also be required, as well as the below.

Provide individual and group counselling using comprehensive evidence-based mental health assessments, therapies, and interventions
-
Assess changes in the client's behavior, psychiatric condition, or response to treatment and make recommendations based on observations made.

Assist clients in increasing awareness, and in making use of community resources to ensure; food, shelter, leisure, health care and transportation needs are met
-
Advocate and liaise with appropriate community providers, i.e., initiating client case reviews, collaborative engagement, and clinical case management
-
Represent the mental health program during organizational and/or community committees.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
-
Master’s degree or above in Human Service Discipline training and education in counseling/ therapy/ psychotherapy
-
Current registration AND in good standing within associated professional college
-
CPR and First Aid Certification required
-
Recent related clinical experience working with individuals with serious mental illness preferably in a community setting
-
Understanding and experience working with individuals in mental health crisis, including conducting assessment for risk to self/others and creating collaborative safety plans
-
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-
Experience working with individuals with Concurrent Disorders
-
Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principals
-
Demonstrate high level of skills and ability to negotiate and communicate with clients, their families, informal supports, service providers and members of the community
-
Working knowledge of Mental Health Reform, Mental Health Act, all applicable privacy legislation, Ontario Hospital’s Act, Regulated Health Professionals act, in particular the regulated act of Psychotherapy

Evidence of continuing education courses in mental health or related disciplines
-
Knowledge of community resources and/or demonstrated experience engaging successfully with community partners to provide fulsome care
-
Evidence of excellent communication, interpersonal and psychotherapeutic skills
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants are required provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check, that was complete less than one year from the date of hire. This requirement must be met within the first sixty (60) days of employment.
Additionally, to the above, successful applicants are also required to complete the Health Care Worker Health review process which includes providing an up-to-date immunization record to ensure compliance with the Ontario Hospital Association Communicable Diseases Surveillance Protocols within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Northumberland Hills Hospital operates a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all staff.
