About the role

The Opportunity

Sussex Strategy Group is seeking an Associate/Senior Associate to join our Federal practice group in our Ottawa office. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting our clients across a range of sectors, working closely with other team members to develop and execute public affairs strategies that advance our clients’ interests and contribute to positive outcomes in the federal policy landscape, particularly in areas such as Energy, Infrastructure, Finance, and Defence.

While primarily focused on supporting the Federal team with client work and strategy, the Associate will also be responsible for attending meetings with clients and providing updates on key policy developments to our network.

Ways You Can Contribute

Conduct research and analysis on federal policy, regulatory developments, and stakeholder positions. Assist in the development of public affairs strategies and advocacy campaigns. Draft communication materials, including briefing notes, press releases, and policy briefs. Monitor media coverage and provide insights on relevant issues impacting clients at the Federal level. Coordinate meetings, events, and stakeholder engagements, including government relations activities. Support internal and external communications initiatives related to federal government relations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and integration of public affairs efforts. Stay current with industry trends, political developments, and emerging issues affecting the federal policy environment.

Who You Are

University degree in political science, public policy, public administration, business, economics, law, or a related field. Graduate degree is considered a strong asset. Minimum 3 years of relevant government, political, and or industry experience, ideally with exposure to policy files in sectors such as Energy, Infrastructure, Finance, and Defence. Strong research, analytical, and writing skills. Knowledge of Canadian federal policy, regulatory frameworks, and key stakeholders. Experience with stakeholder engagement, media relations, and event coordination. Must be detail oriented and focused on accuracy of work. Self-motivated with an interest in taking on new tasks and learning new skills. Ability to work in multi-tasking environment, and the flexibility to adapt to different situations and client needs. Prior agency experience is a strong asset. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Proven organization, time management and problem-solving skills.

Pay Grade: $70,000 - 115,000 (commensurate with experience)
