Job overview

This role is one of seven Branch Director positions reporting to the Executive Director and National President. Together with the Political Advisors to the President and Executive Vice-President, they form the Directors’ Team.

The Directors’ Team is responsible for the operational planning, development, and execution of the work of the union, ensuring the strategic objectives of PSAC are successfully met.

The specific areas of accountability for this position, include the union’s communications, campaigns, political action, human rights, and membership education work. The Director is responsible for supervising and guiding the employees and leadership team overseeing those areas of work. In addition to being accountable for the development and implementation of the work of the branch, they play a key role in providing strategic advice to the elected leadership of the union.

In carrying out this work, the Director will also be charged with the financial oversite of their branch, the recruitment and performance management of the employees under their supervision; as well as maintaining efficient systems and operations amongst their various teams.

What you will bring to the table:

Education/Experience

  • This position requires a post-secondary degree in at least one of the major areas of accountability, or commensurate professional experience.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in either a communications or human rights related field.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years experience leading a team and overseeing operational duties such as budgeting, performance management, and staff recruitment and development.
  • Experience working in a labour or social justice organization.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrated commitment to union principles and social justice.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital and traditional communications practices.
  • Knowledge and experience using various campaign tactics.
  • A significant understanding of key concepts in human rights, particularly those connected to anti-racism, persons with disabilities, gender equity, and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how to effectively shape public opinion and develop campaigns that lead to policy or legislative change.
  • Knowledge of key concepts in workplace health & safety, and popular adult education.
  • Knowledge of the various federal, provincial and territorial acts, regulations, jurisprudence and policies relating to the key areas of work in the branch.

  • A passion for advocacy related to key issues in labour and social justice movements.
  • A strong desire to build and lead teams dedicated to creating progressive change in workplaces and communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with conflicts, build credibility and trust between parties.
  • Excellent judgment; demonstrated problem-solving, consultative, persuasive and conflict resolution skills to provide sound direction and advice on a variety of complex operational and/or political issues.
  • Ability to work through collective decision-making structures and processes.

  • Second language level indicated above is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Preferred candidates may have their second language skills assessed as part of the hiring process. However, valid federal government SLE results can be used toward this.
