About the role

Long Term Occasional Teaching Position 1.0 FTE Itinerant Literacy Intervention Teacher Itinerant Literacy Intervention Teachers support Early Reading Screening, literacy development, language acquisition and literacy intervention in elementary schools. The role is integral to ensuring that all students receive high-quality, data-informed literacy instruction and early intervention, fostering academic achievement and equitable learning opportunities for all.

This assignment is being posted subsequent to Article 17.1.3 The Hiring of Occasional Teachers to Long Term Assignments found in the Central Terms of the Board’s collective agreements with OECTA. The end date is subject to change, however, this assignment will not extend beyond the end of the current school year.

Essential Qualifications

  • Current member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Qualifications in Primary and Junior Divisions
  • Additional qualifications in Special Education, French Second Language (FSL), English Second Language (ESL), and/or Reading qualifications are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of current Ministry initiatives
  • Experience with classroom implementation of systematic literacy programming (including structured, explicit instruction).
  • Strong understanding of data-driven instruction, including progress monitoring to assess program effectiveness and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Experience supporting literacy instruction and intervention in primary classrooms.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based literacy programs and pedagogical approaches.
  • Knowledge of the Steps to English Proficiency (STEP) framework to assess and monitor English language learners is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of assistive technology tools and strategies to support literacy development.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to diverse school environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle (required for travel between schools).
  • Note: School assignments may be reassigned as necessary to meet the needs of the system and its students.

Key Responsibilities Under the direction of the Superintendent of Education, the Itinerant Literacy Intervention Teacher will:

  • Provide explicit, systematic, and research-based early literacy intervention in primary classrooms.
  • Support early reading screening in all schools within the system, ensuring data-driven decision-making for intervention strategies.
  • Conduct and support diagnostic assessments to inform the design and delivery of targeted literacy interventions.
  • Continuously monitor, document, analyze and report student progress, adjusting instructional methods to support student success.
  • Assist educators in implementing tiered literacy instruction, including classroom-based compulsory resources (Tier 1) and early intervention programming (Tier 2).
  • Model and coach educators in evidence-based literacy instruction and assistive technology implementation to support diverse learning needs.
  • Provide intervention within French as a Second Language (FSL) classrooms or deliver classroom instruction while the classroom teacher provides targeted literacy intervention.
  • Design and implement educational programs that support English language acquisition and academic achievement.
  • Administer initial Step assessments for Multilingual Language Learners (MLLs) and provide MLL, ESL, and literacy-based supports in assigned schools.
  • Contribute to Student Success strategies, including data collection and reporting for MLL students.
  • Other duties as assigned.
