The Opportunity

The Solid Waste Operations Branch is a branch within the Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department. This branch is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. Responsibilities also include the operation of the scalehouse, which is the first point of contact for customers and waste entering the landfill site.

Under the supervision of the Landfill Operations Supervisor, the Landfill Operations Attendant’s primary role is to safely and efficiently operate the Waste Segregation Facility at the Environmental Centre on a daily basis. The Waste Segregation Facility is a key element of the City’s Sustainable Waste Management Strategy and the Landfill Operations Attendant play a significant role in increasing waste diversion and enhancing the standards associated with waste management.

The Waste Segregation Facility includes designated locations for waste separation and disposal by residential and commercial customers visiting the Barrie Landfill Site. The core responsibilities include: operating the Waste Segregation Facility in accordance with Provincial requirements; recovering and diverting recyclable materials; properly disposing of non-hazardous municipal solid waste; providing direct customer service; collect/monitor/report on system data; educating visiting customers and promoting waste diversion programs. Effective and efficient operation of the Waste Segregation Facility is critical to the success of the municipality’s Sustainable Waste Management Strategy and the Landfill Operations Attendant plays a significant role in developing and advancing key waste diversion initiatives.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Secondary School Diploma
  • Forklift Truck Operator Certificate

Experience

  • One (1) year of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
  • Demonstrated experience in landfill/waste management operations or comparable duties and demonstrated knowledge of Provincial environmental protection legislation and related environmental compliance approvals, including:
    • Six (6) months experience operating and maintaining a Forklift Truck in a safe manner

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to effectively diffuse clients

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License in good standing with air brake endorsement

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

  • Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Other Important Information

Location: Environmental Centre, 272 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:

  • Pay Level: Level 3 (Under Review)
  • Yearly Salary: $55,827.20 to $66,830.40
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $26.84 to $32.13
