About the role

Victor Energy Ltd. is a leader in powerline construction services, specializing in transmission, distribution, and substation projects across Canada and internationally. We deliver safe, efficient, and reliable solutions that support the energy transition and strengthen critical infrastructure.

Within Victor Energy, the Right-of-Way (ROW) Department focuses on planning, estimating, and execution support — including permitting, environmental coordination, corridor clearing, and access road construction. Our team combines GIS expertise, environmental awareness, and field experience to deliver practical solutions. We support projects across Canada and Europe, providing clients with accurate, data-driven ROW planning and field execution strategies.

Position Overview

We are seeking a GIS Technician to join our growing ROW Department. This role is a great entry point for someone with strong GIS skills who wants to apply their expertise directly to real-world ROW and access projects.

You will start by supporting planning, estimating, and project mapping needs, while helping to build and maintain a company-wide GIS framework for projects. Field experience in forestry, civil, or ROW work is considered a strong asset, but not required to get started.

As the ROW Department grows, the right candidate will have opportunities to expand into project planning, estimating, and leadership support. This is an excellent role for someone who wants to grow with the department and shape their career path as new opportunities emerge.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

·         Develop and maintain GIS databases for ROW projects, ensuring accuracy and consistency across bids and projects.

·         Produce high-quality maps, figures, and analyses for proposals, estimating, and project execution.

·         Support planning of ROW corridors, access routes, and clearing limits using GIS tools.

·         Integrate GPS/GNSS field data into project workflows and reporting.

·         Collaborate with estimators, project managers, and ROW supervisors to align GIS products with project needs.

·         (As needed) participate in field data collection, site verification, and ROW assessments.

Qualifications

·         Education/Experience: Diploma or degree in GIS, Geomatics, Environmental Sciences, Civil/Forestry Technology, or related field. Equivalent experience considered.

·         Technical Skills: Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online (must have). Familiarity with mobile data collection (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, or equivalent). Strong Excel/data management skills. Bonus: Python/ArcPy scripting, ModelBuilder, Global Mapper, AutoCAD.

·         Assets (not required, but valuable): Experience in forestry, ROW, or civil construction. Comfort with outdoor/remote environments and GPS/GNSS data collection.

·         Personal Traits: Detail-oriented and organized. Strong communicator, comfortable working with technical and field teams. Ambitious and motivated to grow into broader project responsibilities.

Work Environment

Hybrid role: Combination of Nisku office, home office, and occasional field work.
Travel: 10–25% depending on project needs (Alberta, Canada, and occasionally Europe).
Reporting: Reports to the Manager, ROW Department, with growth opportunities as the team expands.

What We Offer

·         Competitive salary based on experience.

·         Training and professional development opportunities (GIS, project management, ROW planning).

·         Travel allowances and accommodations when in the field.

·         Room for professional growth, with the chance to expand into project planning, estimating, or leadership as the department evolves.

Benefits

  • Extended Healthcare Plan (Medical, Disability, Dental & Vision)
  • Group RRSP
  • Group Life - AD&D - Critical Illness Insurance
  • Training & Development
  • Employee Assistance Program - Counseling
