Location/Division Specific Information
This role is based in our Mississauga location, within our dynamic shipping division.
How Will You Make an Impact?
As an Import Compliance Specialist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you will guarantee the seamless import of goods, strictly following regulations and laws. Your role will be essential in upholding our top-tier standards.
A Day in the Life
- Coordinate and handle incoming international shipments, customs documentation and import documentation records while maintaining import product database.
- Review and approve customs documentations.
- Track and trace shipments, providing updates to relevant parties.
- Maintain communication with customs authorities and facilitate customs release using Canada self-assessment program.
- Identify and resolve any shipment and import issues including clearance delays.
- Handle customs compliance procedures, Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) and CARM, Canada Border and Services Agency digital initiative.
- Conduct restricted/denied party screening for business partners.
- Resolve discrepancies, request appropriate corrections, reconcile or protest as appropriate; verify valuation methodology including assists.
- Participate actively in Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) customs audits, internal audits, and other significant projects as required.
- Maintain Canada United States Mexico Agreement (CUSMAs) database for imported product that qualify.
- Provide operational backup to Whitby import activities, as required.
- Perform alternating or rotating shift work as required.
- Travel to the offsite warehouse location as required.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent experience required.
Experience
- At least 3 years of prior experience working as an import coordinator or in a related position.
- Experience filing Canada Export Reports using CBSA websites.
- Experience with SAP (preferred) in sales & distribution, planning, and shipment modules.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of import regulations and HTS classification.
- Familiarity with INCOTERMS and responsibilities outlined in sales contracts.
- Strong attention to detail, efficient time management, and excellent interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in logistics software and Microsoft Office programs.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
Light physical effort; occasional equipment operation. Comfortable indoor environment with potential mild discomfort from dust, fumes, or temperature extremes. Use of Personal Protective Equipment may be required.
