Job Summary

The Team
At the Northwest Fire Centre, you'll join a dynamic and established team of diverse individuals dedicated to working together towards a common goal of wildfire management and safety. Our team comprises both Unit crews, comprised of 22 people, and Initial Attack crews, made up of 4, with initial attack bases hosting between 18 and 52 members. As a part of this team, you'll collaborate with professionals in wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery from across the province. The Initial Attack Fire Crew Supervisor plays a critical role in executing fire suppression and hazard plans, ensuring crews are effectively mobilized in incident response. The Role
As an Initial Attack Fire Crew Supervisor, your responsibilities will shift throughout the year. In the spring, you'll focus on preparing for new staff and overseeing their training. During fire season, your role is to ensure the team is well-supported and performing effectively in wildfire response. In the fall and winter, you'll help with hiring and ramping up for the next season.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 plus 4 seasons forest fire related experience; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; AND

  • Valid Basic First Aid* (formally known as First Aid Ticket OFA Level 1)

  • Successful completion of pre-employment fitness standard; AND

  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type; ie, Hover exit weight; AND

  • Minimum 2 seasons of supervisory experience

  • Valid Class 5 driver licence or equivalent

  • Basic First Aid is the new name for Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1, as of November 2024. The name change is part of a restructuring of first aid courses in British Columbia to align with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Incident Commander 4 or higher

  • Faller/QFT Certification

Provisos /Willingness statements

  • Valid Class 5 driver licence

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures

  • To keep current on emerging issues

  • To take in-house training and certification as required

  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required

  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan

  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required

  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned

  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions

  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements.
