QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 education (MB Standards)
  • Completion of a recognized Unit Clerk Course
  • Completion of a recognized medical terminology course or program, Level I
  • Two (2) years previous experience in patient scheduling
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), as well as Internet applications and other Information Technology
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated communication skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility to facilitate changes in techniques and procedures
  • Ability to display independent judgment
  • Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population
  • Ability to respect and promote confidentiality
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position on a regular basis

POSITION SUMMARY

The Clerk IV – Operating Room Slating Clerk, under the direction of the Care Team Manager, functions as an integral part of the health care team and is responsible for scheduling patients for surgical procedures within the Operating Room. As well, the Clerk IV – Operating Room Slating Clerk is responsible for communicating with the various disciplines involved on the surgical team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overview:

  • Plans the Operating Room slate in an efficient manner

  • Collects and transcribes all Operating Room procedure schedules, utilizing the Slating Protocol as directed.

  • Collects and compiles all pertinent information relevant to safe and efficient patient care.

  • Aware of instrument and equipment limitations of department.

  • Allows adequate time for procedure according to physician request.

  • Strives for smooth progression of workflow for physicians, nursing staff, pateints, clinics, and Operating Room.

  • Communicates specialty equipment, instrument and supply requests to the CCC, CRN or designate.

  • Communicates and coordinates changes to surgical slates as needed.

  • Manages surgical booking forms following provincial wait time benchmarks using a standardized filing system.

  • Communicates request for additional diagnostic tests to applicable department.

  • Refers conflicts and procedural questions to the CCC, CRN, CTM or designate as needed.

  • Schedules the number of procedures based on room scheduling template.

  • Assesses ways to improve the slating process or scheduling process for the Operating Room.

  • Prepares tentative surgical schedule based on facility requirements.

  • Compiles required statistics, utilization reports, wait time reports based on facility requirements as needed.

  • Coordinates communication and redirects inquiries as needed with patients/family members to ensure safe and effective patient care.

  • Other duties as assigned.
