Position Title: ASSISTANT FIRE & EMERGENCY COORDINATOR
Reports to: Manager, Safety & Security
Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Safety & Security, the Assistant Fire & Emergency Coordinator supports the coordination of fire safety procedures, emergency response plans, and evacuation protocols to assist with the delivery of the Haisla Nation Council’s fire and emergency services. This role involves supporting the planning, training, and implementing strategies to prevent fire hazards and respond effectively to emergencies, acting as a key point of contact in an emergency to ensure that loss of life, property, or injury because of fire is prevented and/or minimized.

Duties & Responsibilities
Fire Safety & Emergency Preparedness:
- Support the Manager, Safety & Security and Fire & Safety Coordinator to implement fire safety policies, procedures, and evacuation plans.
- Assist in the preparation of policy drafts and standard operating procedures related to Emergency Response.
- Assist in coordinating regular risk assessments to identify fire hazards and take corrective actions
- Support regular inspections of all fire detection, suppression systems, and equipment (fire extinguishers, alarms, etc.).
- Perform regular vehicle checks to ensure one ton and pumper truck are operational and ready to respond in case of emergency.
- Assist with updating emergency response plans (ERPs) for various potential emergencies (fires, natural disasters, etc.).
- Support the coordination of regular drills (e.g., fire drills, evacuation drills) and evaluate their effectiveness across all Haisla Nation facilities.
Incident Response:
- Support Haisla Nation’s communication in the event of a fire or emergency.
- Assist with monitoring and responding to all email and phone calls on a regular basis.
- Assist with monitoring and responding to all emails and phone calls during and emergency event to ensure cohesive communication across Haisla Nation and provide any follow-up communication, as required.
- Support the coordination of emergency response activities, including evacuation, first aid, and communication with emergency services.
Volunteer and Community Coordination:
- Assist with recruiting and training volunteers to the Haisla Volunteer Fire Department.
- Help organize periodic fire and emergency response training sessions, ensuring all volunteers and employees are familiar with safety protocols.
- Support the delivery of safety awareness campaigns to reduce risks and increase preparedness.
- Attend community events such a sports days, tournaments and cultural events to support safety operations.
Administration and Reporting:
- Assist with the preparations of investigations relating to fire and emergency incidents.
- Contribute to the preparation of reports outlining the cause, response effectiveness, and preventive measures for future incidents.
- Maintain records of inspections, safety audits, and incidents.
- Coordinate and attend meetings.
- Other duties as assigned or required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Post Secondary Diploma in Fire Science, Safety Management or related field or equivalent combination of education, experience and training.
- Strong knowledge of fire prevention and emergency response protocols.
- Demonstrated competency using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SharePoint, related databases and the Internet.
- Working knowledge of First Nations structure, and of funding opportunities for First Nations emergency planning and management.
- Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in emergency situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
- Possess valid B.C. Driver’s license.
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Experience
Required
- Experience supporting fire prevention programs, emergency planning, and response protocols.
- Previous experience in fire services, emergency response, or safety coordination, ideally in a community-based or First Nations environment.
Preferred
- Experience working with or knowledge of First Nations governance, community safety, or emergency management structures is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with maintaining safety records, incident reports, and audits.
- Background in coordinating or supporting volunteers (e.g., volunteer fire departments or community safety teams).
