Position Purpose: The HVACR Technician, Grade 1 is responsible for the daily inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of HVACR equipment, pumps & motors, site and exhibit lighting, emergency lighting, pneumatic/hydraulic doors, and generators. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
Core Role Responsibilities:
- Duties include, but not restricted to the inspection, operation, preventive maintenance, service, installation & repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, backup generators, pumps, motors, fans, miscellaneous equipment and all associated components, accessories, controls and operating systems.
- Maintains water softener and RO systems.
- Maintains lighting requirements including emergency lights, exhibit, greenhouse, and tank lighting.
- Maintains the cleanliness of all mechanical rooms site wide.
- Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the Shop and surrounding areas.
- Calibrating of electrical and indoor and outdoor resets controls, troubleshooting HVACR systems and associated components.
- Chemical testing on closed loop and cooling tower systems, and maintenance of these systems.
- Meter reading and generator testing.
- Monitor oil and diesel tanks and maintaining ozone.
- Installation of new equipment as required.
- Assist in maintenance related duties.
- Advises other Units regarding requested installations or repairs.
- Performs all duties of this trade in compliance with municipal, provincial and/or federal requirements and within standards set by the Toronto Zoo.
- Assist with and communicate details regarding contractor work on site as it pertains to the area including, but not limited to, projects put forth through the Project Management Office.
- Respond to and communicate details regarding emergency situations while on site as it pertains to the area and Toronto Zoo policies.
- Follows all policies and branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training courses as required.
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
- Must have completed high school, OSSD, or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum of 5 years proven experience in the same or similar position.
- Must have a valid Gas Technician 1 Certificate and preference will be given to those who also possess a valid Refrigeration/Air Conditioning Mechanics certification, and/or Ozone Depletion Protection.
- Must have experience threading, grooving and pressing steel pipe.
- Must have experience soldering and dazing copper pipe.
- Good knowledge of burners, air handling & boiler systems, electronics and electricity is required.
- Knowledge and previous experience in BAS controls and commercial equipment is required.
- Must be able to read schematic and electrical plans.
- Must be able to read and utilize technical manuals.
- Must have a working knowledge of codes and regulations affecting their work.
- Must be able to withstand varying climatic conditions both indoors and outdoors.
- Must have Working at Heights, Fall Arrest, and Elevated Work Platform Certificates.
- Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job including heights, standing, walking, climbing stairs / ladders, and ability to lift / carry heavy loads up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to work in a team environment and also with minimum supervision.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with strong communications skills.
- Working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS legislation.
- Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver’s license valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
- Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems.
- Must be able to work weekends, shifts and holidays as scheduled (Required to work rotating shifts, 8 and 12 hour shifts which include day and night shifts).
- Must be able to deal with staff and public in a courteous and efficient manner.
- Must be able to work in varying weather conditions.
- Capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position.
