About the role

The Legal Services Department plays a critical role in our organization by providing comprehensive legal support across various domains. Comprising Corporate Legal, Transaction Legal, and Real Estate Legal divisions, this department ensures legal compliance, safeguards the organization's interests, and facilitates smooth project delivery.

As part of Infrastructure Ontario’s Transaction Legal team, you will have an opportunity to play a leading role in Ontario’s Transit Oriented Communities development projects to build mixed-use communities that will bring more housing, including affordable housing options, and jobs within a short distance of transit.

What You Will Do

  • Provide high-quality and commercially minded legal advice and service to internal clients and senior management on matters related to Infrastructure Ontario’s Transit Oriented Communities portfolio.
  • Be accountable for a team of lawyers assigned to the Transit Oriented Communities portfolio in their carriage of files and issue management, and responsible for managing the team’s performance. Give direction to Transaction Legal team members and support their development through coaching and mentoring.
  • Support the Vice Presidents, Transaction Legal on corporate-wide initiatives and other general matters.
  • Oversee the provision of legal support on a portfolio of Transit Oriented Communities projects.
  • Provide advice and guide project lawyers in structuring and implementing Transit Oriented Communities projects. This will often require innovative thinking to develop and negotiate agreements reflecting the needs of each project.
  • Draft, review, analyze and negotiate complex agreements, opinions, memoranda, and procurement documents to manage risk and ensure that the government’s objectives are achieved.
  • Ensure compliance with Infrastructure Ontario’s governance and real estate requirements.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with project partners, funding partners and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee and direct external counsel; interpret and disseminate legal advice and recommendations to senior lawyers and senior management.
  • Represent Infrastructure Ontario in relations with representatives of the government, public- and private-sector stakeholders, the media and the general public.
  • Educate legal team and internal clients on legal matters through discussions and presentations.
  • Assume other legal and management duties as assigned.

What We Are Looking For

  • We are seeking an individual with a minimum of several progressive years of experience practicing law or similar related experience in the area(s) of commercial real estate, development, infrastructure, construction, and/or corporate/commercial.
  • Experience with real estate development transactions is required. Experience with transit-oriented development transactions (or equivalent) is desired.
  • Experience acting for clients (in either the public or private sector) on large and/or complex transactions is desired.
  • The individual must have a university degree in law (LLB or JD) and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.

  • Proven management and leadership skills and abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand business issues quickly, think strategically, understand the business implications of proposed legal solutions and exercise good judgment in providing timely and practical legal, strategic and commercial advice.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a way that can be understood by both lawyers and non-legal clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify areas of change and initiate, drive and see through such change to completion.
  • Consistently demonstrates reliability, a commitment to a high level of quality and care in their work, decisiveness, self-confidence, self-control and self-awareness.
  • The ability to thrive in a fast paced, high-pressure and multi-task environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a large team-based environment of a growing organization.
