About the role

On behalf of our client, Abstract Developments , a prominent real estate development and construction firm based in Victoria, BC , we are searching for a highly professional and experienced Controller to support the Founder and his immediate family in the management of their private financial affairs.

This is a rare opportunity for an accomplished accounting professional to work in a trusted and hands-on role, overseeing a diverse and interesting financial portfolio that includes multiple residences, rental properties, private investments, and special projects beyond the core business. Liaising closely with the CFO of Abstract Developments and the external accounting firm that manages the family’s broader financial picture, you will ensure all parties are aligned and financial records are accurate, current, and well-organized.

Your day would include:

  • Full-cycle accounting for the personal and family portfolio, tracking income, expenses, and assets across a range of properties, rentals, investments, and private initiatives
  • Producing clear and accurate financial summaries and reconciliations for monthly and annual review
  • Managing day-to-day banking activities, payments, disbursements, and financial controls
  • Maintaining organized records of contracts, insurance policies, and tax-related documentation
  • Supporting the Founder and spouse as their primary point of contact for personal accounting matters
  • Liaising regularly with Abstract’s CFO and the external accounting firm to coordinate and ensure consistency across financial processes
  • Assisting with tax preparation, special projects, and financial planning initiatives as they arise

Our ideal Controller brings:

  • A minimum of 6+ years of related accounting experience in a structured, professional setting
  • CPA designation with 4+ years of post-designation experience required
  • Strong knowledge of financial practices related to tax, real estate, insurance, and investment management
  • Proficiency with accounting software such as QuickBooks and Sage
  • Excellent Excel skills and the ability to adapt to new platforms or tools

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with high attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain trusted relationships
  • Hard working, self-directed and able to operate at a high level
