Role Summary
The Junior Assistant is a current vacancy and is responsible for a variety of tasks that facilitate the daily preparation and conditioning of the golf course. This includes planning and execution of various agronomic practices on the greens, tees, and fairways. The Junior Assistant will also assist in preparation, mixing and the subsequent application of fertilizers and pesticides. The Junior Assistant will also be responsible for support and delegation of duties for the Golf Course Maintenance Attendants.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting and maintenance of automatic irrigation system, including pipe repairs and sprinkler head replacement
- Installation of drainage improvements in fairways and rough
- Use of ride-on golf maintenance equipment for mowing tees, fairways and rough
- Responsible for watering sod, seed, trees and required areas using hoses and sprinklers
- Maintain active sand audit in all green and fairway bunkers ensuring proper depths
- Apply soil amendments and wetting agents to various turf surfaces as required
- Apply products using specialized application turf equipment
- Topdressing greens, tees, and fairways
- Aerification of greens, tees, and fairways
- Verti-cutting and overseeding
- Tractor operation (Kubota 7040, Kubota 5460)
- Heavy equipment operation (JCB 407-wheel loader and JCB 300T skid steer)
- Chemical and fertilizer spray application on greens and tees
- Granular fertilizing; greens, tees, and fairways
- Loading sand and aggregates
- Responsible for turf disease identification and IPM scouting
- Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the health and safety program
- Adhere to all environmental policies and programs as required
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Ontario Pesticide Applicators License or Interim Apprentice Certificate an asset
- Post-secondary education or certification in golf courses or turfgrass management an asset
- At least two years of previous golf course experience
- Valid driver’s license
- Must possess excellent customer service skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Must be extremely responsible with integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
Working Conditions
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Required to move, lift, carry, pull, and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance
- Stand, sit or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire shift
- Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, and pulling
- Move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces
- Significant exposure to varying weather conditions
- Will encounter obnoxious smell from wastewater, gasoline, and diesel fuels
- Will encounter hazardous materials, dangerous or toxic substances and chemicals
- May encounter excessive noise from engines and equipment
- Work area is located alongside deep water
