About the role

Position Summary

This position is for an Assistant Controller supporting a single location or region containing various hauling operations, recycling facilities, transfer stations, and/or landfills across British Columbia. The incumbent will act as a financial business partner to the General Manager and Regional Controller, performing complex business analysis, evaluating detailed pro formas, assisting with bid creation and submittals, analyzing contracts and productivity optimization, managing acquisition/divestiture due diligence and integration or disposal processes, and completing annual budgets, monthly and quarterly forecasts, and variance analyses for assigned business units.

The primary duty is to support the Regional Controller and business unit Managers by providing essential information and analysis that enables informed business decisions aligned with corporate goals and objectives.

Essential Functions General Ledger / Financial Statements

▪ Review, analyze, modify, and approve financial statements.

▪ View and print financial statements for personal review.

▪ Verify all changes are completed and submitted by operational managers by required deadlines, coordinating with the Regional Controller.

▪ Provide verbal or written explanations for moderate-to-large variances from the baseline plan.

Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable

▪ Ensure proper coding accuracy through direct communication with operational managers and staff; provide training as necessary.

▪ Ensure vendor invoices are input or accrued in the correct reporting period; provide training as needed.

▪ Monitor ETS/Workday (AP) systems to ensure rejected invoices are resolved.

▪ Review credit and debit adjustments in the billing system.

▪ Review A/R aging reports and investigate anomalies.

Fixed Assets

▪ Review costs from the general ledger to detailed reports.

▪ Ensure capital requisitions are generated correctly; provide training as needed.

▪ Run reports and evaluate as required.

▪ Ensure compliance with asset disposal procedures.

▪ Ensure capital is accrued properly at year-end.

Audit

▪ Perform audit testing as requested by auditors or directed by the Regional Controller.

▪ Review Corporate Internal Audit Reports on a timely basis.

▪ Identify recurring issues and provide training as needed.

Budgeting / Forecasting

▪ Assist operational leaders with timelines, review, consolidation, modification, and completion of annual, quarterly, and monthly budgets or forecasts.

▪ Participate in completion of capital and financial budgets and forecasts in accordance with corporate deadlines.

Acquisitions / Divestitures / Swaps / Municipal and Other Bids

▪ Participate in review, analysis, due diligence, and pro formas for regional acquisitions, divestitures, or swaps as directed by the Regional Controller.

▪ Partner with managers or executives to negotiate contracts and address financial and operational matters as required.

▪ Transition new acquisitions into existing branches or establish new branches as needed.

▪ Participate in preparation, review, presentation, and submission of bids.

▪ Schedule training for operational staff as required.

▪ Coordinate meetings with department heads to support acquisition or divestiture transitions.

Pricing

▪ Ensure pricing for all services and equipment is routinely reviewed to reflect costs and desired margins.

▪ Implement price adjustments as directed to meet Branch, Regional, and Corporate objectives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in compliance with applicable federal, provincial, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and company policies.
  • Assist other Regional Controllers as directed.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

Education, Training, Experience, And Licensing/Certification Requirements

  • Holds or is actively pursuing a CPA designation.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of accounting or finance experience in a medium-to-large business environment.
  • Waste industry experience preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Excellent leadership, presentation, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • This is not a cubicle accounting role; focus is on operational improvement with field engagement as needed.
  • Very strong PC skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Access); Excel proficiency must be above average to highly skilled.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Ability to travel to and walk landfills, transfer stations, material recycling facilities, and hauling facilities.
  • Ability to deliver multiple presentations at various management levels inside and outside the company.

Working Conditions

  • Indoor office environment approximately 90–95% of the time.
  • Minimum travel (3–5 nights per quarter).

Pay Range
