Reporting to the Director, Facilities & Studio Services, with day-to-day supervision provided by the Manager, Studio Services, the Foundry Technician is responsible for providing support to OCAD University’s (OCAD U) Foundry, and its student, faculty, and research users, and community partners. Working in collaboration with other academic and administrative resource areas, this role ensures safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the Foundry facilities, its equipment and supplies.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Oversee access to assigned studios for program students, cross-disciplinary students, graduate students, faculty, researchers, and approved community partners
  • Support faculty in their delivery of curriculum by preparing materials, setting up equipment, and providing individual and small group instruction of specialized techniques and equipment
  • Support students in their learning by acting as a resource regarding materials and processes, and assisting with the technical resolution of assignments
  • Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of facilities and equipment by maintaining, repairing or sending out equipment for repair, conducting research and recommending the purchase of new or replacement equipment as required
  • Responsible for health and safety by regularly participating in relevant training, explaining hazards associated with materials and equipment, demonstrating, modelling, and enforcing proper health and safety procedures, and promptly reporting unsafe conditions to the Manager, Studio Services
  • Develop, implement and oversee access policies and procedures, as well as other practices to improve studio operation, efficiency, and usage
  • Perform administrative duties to support the operation of the Foundry, including, but not limited to: coordinating the purchase of supplies and resale of materials; maintaining inventory; and supporting budget planning
  • Supervise open studio access time in the Foundry, and participate in hiring, training, scheduling and supervision of class assistants and/or student monitors where relevant
  • Serve on committees and participate in university special events and/or projects as required
  • Maintain currency in technical developments within the disciplines

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline and a minimum of three years of related experience, or equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience with demonstrated proficiency with foundry materials, tools and equipment proficiency with foundry materials, tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of foundry fabrication methods related to art and design production; knowledge of digital fabrication processes an asset
  • Sound knowledge of, and demonstrated commitment to, healthy and safe work practices, including WHMIS; first aid certification an asset
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to interact with faculty, staff and students
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty

Terms of Employment: This position is a full-time (35 hours per week), nine (9) month probationary appointment from August to May. As partial load appointment, the probationary period is two-years subject to Performance Review for the purpose of recommending the conferral of Permanent status.

Compensation: Hiring Range: $53,200.01 to $64,602.07per annum (pro-rated for partial load), commensurate with experience, plus benefits. Salary Range: $53,200.01 to $76,723.71 (pro-rated for partial load**)**
