The Opportunity

The City of Barrie Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.

Under the general guidance and direction of the Supervisor of Wastewater Technical Services, the Senior Wastewater Technologist position is responsible for providing program, project, and technical support to the Wastewater Operations Branch. This position collaborates with various Branch sections, City departments, and Regulatory Agencies to develop, coordinate, and/or lead various support services, regulatory compliance programs, procurement initiatives, and safety programs including development of technical content for contracts and administering contracted services to support the City's wastewater assets. This position coordinates, develops, and prepares reports of Branch operating data to comply with annual performance measures and reporting requirements. Furthermore, this position provides technical support of the linear wastewater collection system by reviewing and providing recommendations during the design and construction of capital projects, and by collaborating with WWOB staff on the development and implementation of O&M programs to support safe and efficient operation of the collection system as a whole. This position plays an integral part in ensuring wastewater regulatory compliance and protecting public health.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Civil or Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline
  • Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) Designation from the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT)
  • Eligibility for and working towards Wastewater Collection and Wastewater Treatment Operator-in-Training (OIT) Licences from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation & Parks (MECP)

Experience

  • General knowledge of the following principles and standards: asset management principles and processes, budget and finance concepts, and project management principles and practices
  • Working knowledge of the following principles and standards: design, construction, and operations of municipal linear infrastructure sewage works compliance requirements, industry best-practices and standards, and procurement principles and and practices in a public sector environment

  • Intermediate computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word), CMMS programs (Cityworks, Directline, Megamation)
  • Availability to accommodate deadlines or peak period workloads that may extend beyond designated normal workday hours or normal hours per week

Location: Wastewater Treatment Facility, 249 Bradford Street, Barrie, Ontario*

  • Please note that the City has a Hybrid Work Program Policyin place that may allow for a hybrid work arrangement for employees who meet eligibility requirements.

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:

  • Pay Level: Level 9
  • Yearly Salary: $90,521.60 to $108,388.80
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $43.52 to $52.11
