Cloud Operations Analyst - Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking experienced Cloud Operations Analyst to join The Cloud Operations and Design team. A successful candidate must be comfortable working in fast-moving and complex enterprise environments.

The Cloud Operations and Design team focuses on ensuring the AER Cloud environment deployed in Microsoft Azure and completing deployments of complex solutions into the environment. This environment includes but is not limited to servers (IaaS), DBaaS, functions, containers, messaging, and integration technologies, HPC solutions, App Service, AI/ML, DevOps technologies, and storage.

The Cloud Operations Analyst will report to the Manager, Cloud Design & Operations and will be tasked with assisting in the design, implementation, management, and support of the Azure environment. The candidate will contribute to the development and maturity of the Azure environment and help to support existing deployments. A strong focus will be placed on cloud lifecycle management, automation, industry best-practices, and ensuring the security and protection of data in the cloud environment AER has created an 18-month roadmap for addressing IT needs focusing heavily on increasing cloud

capabilities and retiring legacy systems. This candidate will assist the AER in building these capabilities and providing support of the new cloud systems

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Participate in day-to-day cloud operations support to ensure optimal performance, reliability, availability, and security of the company’s data by continuously monitoring the Azure environment with close attention to costing and performance.
  • Increase agility and reduce manual effort using automation and DevOps methodologies, including tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, and Azure DevOps.
  • Implement complex solutions in Azure using Terraform, Bi-cep and other IaaC tools, such as Ansible and Chef, following designs provided by AER cloud architects.
  • Assist AER cloud architects with the design and implementation of cloud solutions, emphasizing DevOps practices and automation.
  • Participate in Change Management meetings and processes.
  • Provide technical support, issue diagnosis, and troubleshooting to internal teams and other stakeholders.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple high-priority activities, providing creative and effective solutions to problems rapidly, on an ongoing basis.
  • Mentor other operations team members in the operation and support of the Azure environment, with a focus on Terraform, Ansible, Chef, and other DevOps tools.
  • Create documentation for cloud solutions, both for internal cloud team use and for tier 1/2 support teams as required.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Diploma in Computer Science or related field,

  • 7+ years in IT support and 3+ years supporting Microsoft Azure.

  • Proven experience in Microsoft Azure cloud administration and deployment

  • Self-directed and capable of delivering high-quality results with minimal supervision

  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server (2016, 2019, 2022 & 2025) and Linux distributions (RHEL, Ubuntu)

  • Hands-on experience managing Azure IaaS resources including Virtual Machines (VMs), VM Scale Sets and Virtual Networking

  • Proficient in Azure PaaS services such as:

    • Azure Functions
    • Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS)
    • Messaging and Integration services
    • App Services and Azure Storage
  • Experience deploying and managing containers in Azure using:

    • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) (preferred)
    • Azure Container Service (ACS)
  • Skilled in PowerShell and other scripting languages for automation and administration

  • Expertise in building and deploying complex ARM templates

  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (IaC), and automated deployments

  • Hands-on experience with Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure

  • Familiarity with DevOps toolchains such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins, and monitoring/logging tools

  • Ability to design and implement automated workflows for cloud resource provisioning, configuration management, and application deployment

  • Programming experience in JavaScript, C#, SQL Server, and REST APIs.

  • Exposure to AI/ML technologies, HPC, and tools like Commvault, Keyfactor, Aquera Identity Sync, and Copilot.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and cross-functionally.
