Job description

In this role, you’ll oversee our radiation protection program, mentor a dedicated team, and uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance. Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee all activities associated with the radiation protection program at the McClean Lake Operation
  • Plan and organize daily monitoring activities utilizing expertise in measuring radon/radon progeny levels and long lived radioactive dust, followed by analysis of the data
  • Supervise Technicians/Technologists in the above activities
  • Work closely with operations to coordinate activities such as ventilation and contamination control, offering help and guidance, when needed
  • Ensure that all radioisotopes are monitored, stored, used and maintained as required by applicable licence conditions
  • Work with operations teams to ensure that movement of material on and off site comply with applicable regulations and/or requirements
  • Prepare reports, analyses and other documents as needed to support both operations and meet corporate needs as required
  • Support Technicians/Technologists by providing leadership, resources, and training, including both hands-on and formal learning opportunities.
  • Promptly respond to situations requiring investigation, mitigation, or control of unacceptable radiation exposure to personnel or potential environmental impact
  • Maintain ongoing communication between the radiation protection team and all operations departments on matters within the scope of the Health, Safety, Environment and Regulatory Relations Department (HSE&RR)
  • Develop and deliver training programs to all workers as required by licences and the company’s ongoing employee education initiatives

Work Location & Schedule:

  • McClean Lake site
  • 14 days in and 14 days out rotating schedule
  • Normally an 11 hour work day, although some activity outside or normal working hours may be required

Ideal qualifications

Skills and Qualifications we’re seeking:

  • Degree in science/engineering preferably with a nuclear sciences option
  • 5+ years experience working in a field directly related to the control of worker exposure to radiation, preferably in a mining or similar environment
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise technical staff
  • High level of proficiency with databases
  • Familiarity with the operation of agencies such as CNSC, LWRS, SMOE or their equivalents
  • Organization and time management skills to coordinate efforts and meet deadlines
  • Cooperative and collaborative with the ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with other departments
  • Effective communication skills
  • Comfortable working in an industrial plant

This position is subject to pre-employment checks including education and criminal record verification.

Drug and alcohol substance testing is a requirement for all safety sensitive positions at Orano Canada.
