##Qualifications
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Engineering Degree or Technology Diploma with additional Fire Systems Certifications required.
- Direct experience in Fire system protection and operations in a large organization is required.
- Significant experience in fire protection industry with direct exposure to operational planning and response, may be considered.
- A member of the Certified Technicians & Technologist Association of Manitoba (CTTAM) would be an asset.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in fire protection and operation (fire safety, ventilation, alarm systems engineering and management, including all facets of system configuration, programming, as well as sound knowledge of installation and troubleshooting) is required.
- Operational knowledge of building fire protection systems, interconnected auxiliary devices, fire response and evacuation protocols required.
- Must have a broad and deep knowledge of Building Code, Fire Code, Electrical and Canadian Standards.
- Knowledgeable of different types of life safely/ electrical/ mechanical systems and devices required.
- Must have general working knowledge of PC hardware and Microsoft Office operating systems.
- High level and working knowledge of applicable City, Provincial, and National Fire and Building Codes, CAN/ULC requirements for fire alarm system, suppression systems, and electrical systems required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills required.
- Excellent strategic, engineering, and analytical thinking, interpersonal, problems solving skills required.
- Ability to interpret and apply Building Code, Fire Code, and all applicable standards during daily work is required.
- Ability to review life safely and mechanical/electrical documents for construction purposes, including renovations and/or alterations to existing systems required.
- Demonstrated abilities to work effectively in a team environment, deal tactfully with all levels of staff and administration, and able to handle stress well required.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and make decisions during emergency/complicated situations required.
- Good physical condition, able to visit all areas, crawlspaces, attics, etc. without assistance is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Positive attitude and a willingness to develop in a specialized discipline.
- Willingness to embrace new technologies.
- Familiarity with computerized scheduling and work order systems would be an asset.
##Key responsibilities
- Act as representative with WFPD, Office of the Fire Commissionaire, Province and City of Winnipeg as required.
- Participate in fire system incidents, equipment failures & investigation, during normal & after hours as required.
- Collaborate & support internal departments, faculties, and ancillary services on life safety & tire systems issues and compliance.
- Provide technical support on system operation conditions, building alterations, maintenance requirements, and system configurations.
- Provide direction and carry out alternative solutions & instructions during major life safety system repairs to maintain fire protection over all occupants and buildings as required by Manitoba Fire Code.
- Participate in successful validation of life safety systems changes.
- Ensuring all critical communication systems & alarms are operational, working with external monitoring contractors are meeting performance requirements.
- Support/authorize staff and contractors to take system off monitoring for service purposes.
- Support internal risk management reviews and provide recommendations on life safety systems operations.
- Administer service contracts & operational projects, budget, procurement, specifications, and compliance.
- Administration on call rotation.
- Ensuing regular review & updating of fire system procedures, instructions, safe work procedures and other related documents.
- Ensuring regulatory documents are accurate and meeting requirements for proper system operation & occupancy.
- Regularly inspecting building & responding to fire code violations and working with respective support departments / faculties to resolve.
- Ensure service contractor & staff compliance, site documentation and safety performance.
- Establish life safety maintenance policies, standards, and procedures for O&M Shop Managers and Trade technicians.
- Ensuring building code violations are tracked, actions documented, communication and final resolutions.
- Generate reports on life safety systems, alarm trends, and related operational data.
- Regularly assess and review all requests approved for new work at the University, including alterations, renovations, and additions to buildings.
- Review existing systems, assessing conditions, life cycles and preparing priority lists for upgrades and replacements including capital and operating costing.
- Work with Life Safety team evaluating products, process, and program improvements.
- Manage monitoring database; create new accounts and delete inactive accounts.
- Review/evaluate/approve procedural requests.
- Hot work process.
- Fire system/equipment shutdowns.
- Special event requests; Indoor & Outdoor activities.
- Cultural event requests; smudging.
- Review lease agreements, rentals to ensure University interests are accurate.
- Chair the Life Safety Physical Plant meetings & reviews.
- Attend & support service contractor & trade staff safety meeting as required.
- Attend & support project contractor meetings as required.
- Attend Health & Safety meetings as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
