The District Itinerant Youth Train in Trades Teacher is a 0.4 FTE position within the Innovative Learning department. Reporting to the Director of Instruction – Innovative Learning (or designate), this teacher supports, promotes, and coordinates SD8’s Youth Train in Trades (YTT) and Youth Work in Trades (WRK) programs in the Nelson area secondary schools in partnership with Selkirk College and SD8 Innovative Learning Services.

Specific duties and responsibilities

Program Coordination

• Support, and maintain an equitable trades programs aligned with district strategic priorities and Ministry policy

• Collaborate and communicate with school counsellors, and administration to ensure student success

• Promote YTT/WRK pathways to students and families

• Facilitate application, intake, and career/graduation pathway planning

• Liaise with provincial and post-secondary partners, including SkilledTradesBC and Selkirk College, to ensure compliance with policy and funding requirements

• Promote inclusive practices and barrier-free access for Indigenous learners, students with disabilities/diverse abilities, and children and youth in care

Student Engagement & Supervision

• Provide direct support and site supervision for students participating in Youth Train in Trades at Selkirk College (Semester 1)

• Conduct regular check-ins and progress monitoring at Selkirk College (Wednesdays and Thursdays, rotation-based)

• Engage with students and families to promote trades and apprenticeship pathways

Monitoring & Accountability

• Track program participation and collect data aligned with SD8’s Career Development Continuous Learning Report

• Maintain accurate records for Ministry audits and 1701 reporting (including dual credit and trades scholarships)

• Ensure program compliance with WorkSafeBC and Ministry-authorized safety protocols

• -Thursdays Week 3: JVH and or CBESS as necessary

Due to district travel, presentations, meetings, and work commitments, schedule adjustments will arise and will be determined by the Director of Instruction or designate. Travel throughout the district is required.

Minimum Academic Qualifications/Experience

a) Professional teaching certificate as recognized by the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care

b) Red seal qualification preferred

d) Exemplary leadership, interpersonal, organizational and consultation skills

e) Possession of a current valid BC Driver’s License or reliable means of travel between sites

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

a) Five years of school-based teaching which includes a minimum of two years classroom experience in a career and trades program

b) Master of Education Degree or equivalent with minimum course work in the area of specified responsibility;

c) Extensive local and provincial knowledge of trades and career programs and current issues in delivery of service;

Reporting Structure

The District Trades Technology & Careers Transitions Teacher Coordinator is accountable to the Director of Instruction of Innovative Learning with direct supervision under the District Principal of Innovative Learning Services.

Salary Range; $63,367 – $111,488 per year, in accordance with the current SD8–Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
