The opportunity:
The University of Manitoba is looking for an Assistant to Directors. This position supports the Director of Cultural Integration and the Director of Indigenous Student Recruitment in advancing the daily operations and strategic priorities of both units, including large- and small-scale Indigenous events and OVPI leadership initiatives. The role provides administrative support for projects, events, and communications, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in scheduling, travel, financial processes, and onboarding. It also oversees payroll and records management, maintains key databases and distribution lists, and prepares necessary documentation and requisitions. Acting as a central point of organization and support, the position requires strong judgment, discretion, and diplomacy in working with senior University personnel and Indigenous community representatives.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
- Completion of a formal training program in a related field is required.
- Post-secondary degree preferred.
- Minimum of 4 years directly related experience is required.
- Experience within a post-secondary institution advancing Indigenous education is required.
- Experience in coordinating projects and events and working collaboratively with others is required.
- Experience in collaborating with Indigenous communities and educational institutions is required.
- Previous administrative experience in an academic setting is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of university policies and procedures, understanding of the relationship between various units and decision-making bodies are strongly preferred.
- Accounting, writing, and editorial experience is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience with Indigenous organizations is preferred.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, colonization, socio-economic issues, and importance of self-determination is required.
- Strong Indigenous cultural awareness and knowledge is required.
- Strong critical thinking skills are required.
- Strong time management skills is required.
- Proficient in multi-tasking and prioritizing work to meet multiple deadlines is required.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions are required.
- Superior organizational skills and the ability to anticipate and resolve problems are required.
- Superior ability to prioritize tasks is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
- High degree of competency with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, online meeting software is required.
- Ability to synthesize information and to take minutes is required.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment is required.
- Ability to perform all duties with confidentiality and with a professional and diplomatic manner is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
