Join our team as a Transit Bus Operator!
The City of Fredericton is seeking applications for people interested in driving a bus for Fredericton Transit. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a bus, in accordance with established procedures and regulations. The transit operator acts as a representative of the City and promotes the transit system by providing prompt and courteous service to transit customers. Incumbents may work varying shifts throughout the day which would also involve working split shifts. Fredericton Transit operates seven days a week with hours of operation from 5:50 am until 11:30 pm most days. Operator II report times vary according to work assigned on their scheduled days of work.
Qualifications Required:
- Minimum Class 5 License but preferred you hold a Class 2 NB License with Airbrake endorsement or have the ability to obtain a class 2 NB drivers license with air endorsement;
- A current (within 2 months) successful criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is required at the time of interview.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in vehicle operation, and knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions involved in the operation of the vehicle;
- Previous experience in dealing with the public, and experience in the operation of a commercial vehicle in excess of one ton are considered assets;
- Ability to communicate in both official languages may be considered an asset.
- A clear driving abstract MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION and maintained during employment.
- This position requires a successful criminal record check with vulnerable sector check at the time of interviews and a clear drivers abstract must be maintained during employment.
What You’ll Do:
- Work a flexible schedule that includes various shifts, split shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays;
- Operate a Transit vehicle in a safe and courteous manner on specified routes and schedules;
- Provide schedule / route information to customers;
- Collect fares according to fare structure from riders of the system;
- Monitor the vehicles while in service, reporting any malfunctions to and following instructions of Dispatcher;
- Perform related work as required.
What You Bring:
- Minimum prerequisite is secondary education, combined with a minimum of three years driving experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered;
- A minimum of a Class 5 License with the ability to obtain a class 2 NB drivers license with air brake endorsement. A Class 2 license with airbrake endorsement is required to drive a Transit bus;
- Successful Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector and a clear driving record;
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in vehicle operation, and knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions involved in the operation of the vehicle;
- Previous experience in dealing with the public, and experience in the operation of a commercial vehicle in excess of one ton are considered assets;
- Experience driving Urban Public Transit is considered an asset;
- Ability to communicate in both official languages may be considered an asset.
