About the role

As the Lead Mechanical Commissioning Engineer you will support the various stages of the Polar Max project with planning, coordinating, and overseeing the mechanical commissioning activities to ensure systems are installed, tested, and ready for operational handover at client sites located in Helsinki, Finland, and Lévis, Québec. The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership, and coordination skills to manage interdisciplinary teams and subcontractors, ensuring a successful project start-up and turnover. More specifically, you will:

  • Support the Commissioning Department in developing vessel-specific commissioning documentation, task-specific risk analyses, permits to work, and livening up notices.
  • Organize and set up test configurations, ensuring all required equipment is onsite and available in accordance with test plans and standards.
  • Lead and coordinate the mechanical aspects of commissioning and testing/trials, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, dock and sea trials, according to the written procedures, while ensuring progress is reported.
  • Present operational commissioned mechanical systems to classification societies and client for witness testing and acceptance.
  • Obtain all required signatures from classification societies and client to complete commissioning documentation and formal closeout.
  • Adhere to all in-house health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies at all times.
  • Lead and manage mechanical commissioning activities across all project phases.
  • Coordinate with engineering, production, and operations teams to ensure alignment on system readiness.
  • Assist Quality Control and Production Departments with pre-commissioning and commissioning activities including flushing, pressure testing, alignment checks, and functional tests.
  • Ensure commissioning activities comply with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and verify mechanical system designs, P&IDs, data sheets, and vendor documentation.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical issues during commissioning phases.
  • Maintain commissioning documentation, including test reports, punch lists, and system turnover packages.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and walk-downs.
  • Lead mechanical team and interface with client representatives, contractors, and vendors.

Requirements

  • Education: Marine Engineer 2nd class with sea-going experience.
  • Experience: 10 to 15 years of relevant experience, including at least 8 years in mechanical commissioning and at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Availability for regular travel to Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, from 2026 to early 2028.
  • Proven ability to safely coordinate machinery space start-ups.
  • Proven experience on a variety of systems on numerous types of vessels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word and Excel specifically.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems: piping, pumps, HVAC, rotating and static equipment, utilities, etc.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams and interfacing with project stakeholders.
  • Must undergo and successfully complete the investigation and security clearance process required by the federal government’s Contract Security Program, as well as meet the requirements of the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
