Reporting to the Mine Project Superintendent, the Mine Captain will supervise daily tasks related to underground mining activities. He or she will ensure operational efficiency with a constant focus on compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards and will oversee the application of company policies. Based at the Windfall site in northern Quebec, the Mine Captain will work an 8-day work schedule followed by 6 days off. Transportation, accommodation, and meals are provided.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist the mine project superintendent in establishing and maintaining a quality team capable of meeting the company's requirements;
  • Establish, in collaboration with the engineering department, daily, weekly, and monthly objectives and set priorities for achieving these objectives;
  • Direct and coordinate the work of employees in your sector;
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the monitoring of activities and underground mine supervisors;
  • Work closely with contractor managers.
  • Interact with underground contractors to ensure compliance with health/safety, work quality, and priorities;
  • Submit daily reports on underground operations to your supervisor;
  • Work closely with the engineering department to establish site operating methods;
  • Participate in task observations in collaboration with the safety and security department (carry out prevention activities);
  • Participate in and lead safety meetings, accident investigations and analyses, and follow up on recommendations, in addition to participating in or conducting planned inspections.
  • Resolve work-related difficulties and recommend measures;
  • Ensure that requested corrections are made;
  • Regularly check the condition of equipment and ensure that repairs are carried out according to priority;
  • Participate in the selection of new equipment and the establishment of operating procedures with a view to improving productivity and health and safety;
  • Identify the materials, tools, and equipment needed for underground operations to run smoothly.
  • Ensure that there is a sufficient number of skilled personnel to effectively meet the needs of underground operations;
  • Manage conflicts when necessary and manage or assist in the management of disciplinary measures;
  • Evaluate employee performance, identify training needs, and develop strategies to support employee development;
  • Actively participate in employee selection;
  • Be safety conscious and maintain a workplace based on mutual respect, fairness, and integrity;
  • Report any situation that could affect the health and safety of personnel at work or the physical integrity of facilities;
  • Comply with health, safety, and environmental policies and rules at all times and ensure that all staff comply with these rules;
  • Perform any other duties related to the position of mine captain that are relevant to the success of the project.

Required qualifications

  • College diploma in mining technology or vocational diploma in ore extraction;
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the mining industry;
  • Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience;
  • Experience working with First Nations (an asset);
  • Bilingualism (French and English), (will be required to work with English-speaking workers), (an asset);
  • Hold a valid Class 5 driver's license;
  • Hold an explosives license;
  • Have completed modular training for mining workers 1 to 7 and 10.

Technical skills

  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety laws and regulations specific to mining, as well as blasting and ground control methods;
  • Knowledge of equipment and materials used in mines;
  • Knowledge of supervision formulas;
  • Have a good knowledge of Office software (Excel, Outlook, etc.).

Basic skills

  • Strong leadership skills;
  • Be an excellent team player, demonstrate tact and political savvy;
  • Be adaptable and open to change and constructive feedback;
  • Have good organizational skills and the ability to recognize priorities;
  • Be independent, show initiative, and be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;

  • Be thorough and demonstrate ethics and integrity;
  • Demonstrate rigor in occupational health and safety and environmental matters.
