About the role

The Opportunity:

As a Kirby Depletion/Development Engineer, you will have the opportunity to make your mark at Canadian Natural, as you grow your career. Our SAGD depletion and development roles create exciting opportunities for professional development and growth. You will be a key player in a dynamic and collaborative team of professionals focused on optimizing our thermal production, in a sustainable way. Working with a multi-disciplinary team of Geoscientists, Production Engineers, field staff and other company professionals, you will learn to use proven subsurface engineering methods in an environment that encourages the development and execution of innovative ideas. You will deliver technical and economic evaluations that influence the company’s investment and operational decisions.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work in a team environment to identify opportunities and create depletion and/or development plans to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the project
  • Monitor and optimize reservoir performance and recovery strategies for Canadian Natural assets
  • Provide effective regular project updates and technical evaluation reports for senior management
  • Design and justify potential workovers, steam and depletion plans, operational and reservoir targets
  • Maintain and update monthly and annual production forecasts for thermal wells using various technical and analytical methods (these forecasts are critical inputs to budget, 10-year planning, and corporate reserves)
  • Lead and participate in best-practice evaluations to support the continuous improvement of our thermal business
  • Ensure the incorporation of relevant regulatory and environmental requirements for asset development plans

What You Bring to the Role:

  • 3 to 15 years of engineering experience with a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA
  • Thermal and petroleum industry experience is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated problem solving, communication, organization and leadership skills
  • Experience with data analytics and visualization methods/software would be an asset (e.g. Tableau, Power BI, Spotfire, Python)
