The City of Calgary is hiring up to two Traffic Engineers for the Roadway Operations & Detours team within the Traffic Services Division in Mobility Operations. As a Traffic Engineer, you will support the safe and efficient movement of all transportation network users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists, by coordinating the planning, design, review, and implementation of temporary traffic control and roadway operations initiatives. Primary duties include:

  • Review third-party temporary traffic control plans (TTCPs) in accordance with The City of Calgary Temporary Traffic Control Manual and applicable technical standards to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and worksite personnel.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on the development of TTCPs and detour designs that support construction, maintenance, special events, and operational activities.
  • Coordinate with contractors, project teams, businesses, the public, and internal groups, including Signals Engineering, Transit, Traffic Field Operations, and the Traffic Management Centre, to support safe and efficient detour implementation.
  • Conduct field inspections to verify compliance of detour set ups with approved TTCPs, permit conditions, bylaws, and relevant standards, and coordinate corrective actions as needed.
  • Respond to 311 service requests, inquiries and concerns from the public, contractors, Ward offices, and City staff.
  • Provide guidance to consultants, private contractors, City staff, and the public regarding temporary traffic control requirements, roadway operations, and construction impacts.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives related to operational processes, team workflows, and permitting functions.
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for roadway operations and detours, including researching best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Ensure service level goals for permits and detour requests are met by developing metrics, reporting systems, and continuous improvement processes for team operations and financials.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil Engineering with a P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work.   • At least 3 years of relevant experience after obtaining your professional designation, which may include traffic engineering, road safety, temporary traffic control design, and/or geometric design.
  • Strong knowledge of transportation engineering principles, TAC guidelines, and traffic operations.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits, and no current suspensions or pending charges is required.
  • A personal vehicle for business purposes is an asset.
  • Experience temporary traffic control design/ implementation and software such as AutoCAD, Synchro, Vissim, and ArcGIS are considered assets.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and standards related to transportation engineering and operations is an asset.
  • Success in this role requires the following competencies:
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Proven ability to work collaboratively, build relationships, and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
    • Ability to interpret technical information, apply sound judgement, and efficiently prioritize work.
    • Experience in customer service and training, mentoring, or supervising staff is considered an asset.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

**Working Conditions:**This position is primarily office based but will require periods of driving and walking at job sites in a variety of conditions, including inclement weather and in-close proximity to traffic and other hazards.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • A security clearance will be conducted.
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.

Workstyle

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.
