The opportunity:

A member of the Student Transitions and Success Centre academic advising team and Bison Sports the Bison+ Advising Program Coordinator uses a developmental approach to the holistic support and academic advising of Bison student-athletes. This approach helps students realize their potential by helping them better understand themselves and their academic plans. The Bisons+ Advising Program Coordinator is a positive spokesperson for Bison Sports and Student Affairs in and outside of UM, supporting the recruitment, admission, registration, and orientation of student-athletes. The incumbent will spend time in both the Student Transitions and Success Centre (205 Tier) and in Bison Sports while working with student-athletes, coaches, leadership, and other administrative staff. The role is positioned within Student Transitions and Success, with an indirect reporting relationship with the Associate Director - Operations of Bison Sports.

We are seeking someone enthusiastic about Bison Sports, who demonstrates Bison Pride, and is passionate about the development of student-athletes as both students and athletes. The position includes variable working hours dictated by administrative deadlines, athletic event schedules, student-athlete recruitment, team meetings, coach’s availability, and demand for advisor services. Working evenings and weekends will be required.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • A University Bachelor's degree is required; a degree in the social sciences or helping profession preferred
  • Two years of directly-related administrative experience is required
  • Knowledge of student services offered on the Fort Garry UM campus and familiarity with the Fort Garry UM campus is required
  • Experience making public presentations and/or teaching experience is required
  • Knowledge of theory relevant to academic advising of student-athletes is required
  • Demonstrated history of academic success is required
  • Knowledge of the characteristics, needs and experiences of student-athletes is required
  • Knowledge of U SPORTS Academic Eligibility policies and regulations are required
  • Knowledge of student-athlete recruitment processes are required
  • Knowledge of UM Admissions policies and processes are required
  • Experience with work-related social media channels is required
  • Experience in facilitation of individual and group problem solving, decision making, planning and goal setting is required
  • Demonstrate adequate understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to history, values, religion, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices are required
  • Participation in Bison Sports Events (as a student-athlete, staff member, or other supporter) is highly preferred
  • Experience supporting student-athletes as an identified cohort is highly preferred
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Ability to employ culturally inclusive active listening techniques including paraphrasing, reflecting and asking open-ended questions for the purpose of clarity and rapport building is required
  • Ability to write clear and concise communications, including but not limited to emails, reports and proposals is required
  • Ability to articulate key messages effectively and professionally, in one-on-one and group settings are required
  • Ability to choose and utilize appropriate technology to enhance communications and demonstrate adaptability in the face of fast-paced technological change is required
  • Ability to contribute to a positive workplace culture, including working collaboratively with others and paying attention to how the team supports its' members are required
  • Ability to support student-athletes to build skills related to social connection, resilience, coping, personal capacity for health and other dimensions of well-being are required
  • Ability to Identify when and with whom to implement appropriate crisis management and intervention responses, including awareness of campus resources and processes
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate degree of confidentiality that follows applicable legal requirements, facilitates development of trusting relationships and recognizes when confidentiality should be broken to protect the student or others
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required
