About the role:
We are looking for an Intermediate Cloud Architecture Specialist to advance our cloud platform that secures and supports Nanometrics products and services. This role is key in leading the strategic planning and evolution of our cloud solutions, with a strong focus on security, resilience, FinOps, and technology adoption.
The specialist will effectively manage and optimize cloud expenditures, ensuring the organization gains maximum value from our cloud investments. A critical component of this role is acting as a technology advisor, staying current with emerging cloud capabilities and services and proposing strategic adoption plans to meet business goals. This is balanced with ensuring that robust security, access control, backup, and recovery plans are operational, and performing spend analysis to guide cost-efficient decisions for business and product teams.
The successful candidate will join our Information Technology and Cloud Solutions (ITCS) team, which is responsible for providing the network and cloud platform infrastructure for delivering business applications.
Responsibilities:
The specialist will use their technical expertise to ensure desired business outcomes are achieved by:
- Being a subject matter expert on cloud technologies, networking, security, access control, and AWS cost management.
- Actively researching emerging cloud technologies and providing clear, strategic recommendations to business, development, and ops teams for efficient adoption. Create solutions that focus on how these tools can enhance data processing and application performance plus customer experience.
- Maintaining and updating an appropriate cloud platform and architecture strategy for the organization, based on current and future technology best practices.
- Guiding business and technical teams on advanced cloud architectures and communicating both the technical and financial impact of strategic decisions.
- Designing, implementing, and managing security and access control policies across the cloud environment (e.g., IAM, security groups).
- Developing and maintaining robust backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans for all mission-critical cloud-based systems.
- Conducting detailed AWS cost analysis (FinOps), identifying spending trends, and recommending and managing optimization strategies (e.g., AWS Savings Plans, Reserved Instances).
- Using software automation and AI to replace manual processes.
- Providing solutions that enable 24/7 monitoring and Service Level Agreement (SLA) assurance.
- Mentoring other team members.
Requirements:
Education and Experience
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in an IT, systems engineering, or software development position with a focus on a cloud platform.
- A BSc or diploma in Engineering, Computer Science, Networking Technology, IT, or a related field.
- Experience defining, presenting, and explaining cloud platform and architecture strategies.
- Experience maintaining and managing mission-critical applications.
- Experience with scripting and programming languages.
Technical and Specialized Knowledge
- A continuous learning mindset and demonstrated ability to rapidly adopt and integrate new cloud services.
- A thorough understanding of and experience with a major cloud provider such as Amazon AWS.
- Expertise in key cloud services including databases, VPNs, and compute services
- Expertise in cloud security services (such as IAM, Security Hub, WAF) and implementing the Principle of Least Privilege.
- Proven experience designing and testing reliable backup and recovery solutions (e.g., AWS Backup, S3 replication).
- Demonstrable expertise with cloud cost management tools (e.g., Cost Explorer, Trusted Advisor, Budgets, Savings Plans) and experience implementing FinOps best practices.
- Experience with Kubernetes and Docker, preferably with EKS.
- Familiarity with build automation tools like Maven for continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
- A strong understanding of networking concepts (e.g., DNS, TCP/IP, UDP) and cloud networking concepts (e.g., VPC, subnetting, security).
- An understanding of current AI technologies

About the role:
