About the role

Settlement Assistant – Canada Summer Jobs

Lethbridge Family Services (LFS) is seeking a settlement assistant to join our Immigrant Services department! This role provides life skills training to newly arrived, high needs Government Assisted Refugees through the provision of settlement services that are culturally appropriate, gender sensitive, and with a trauma informed care approach. This position will include work with the Life Skills team in the community as well.

Settlement assistants:

  • provide and develop a series of relevant, easily understood and engaging group information presentations and/or field trips,

  • provide refugees with simple and practical information on Canadian cultural norms - accessing community resources and assisting refugees with community integration,

  • work collaboratively to develop short and long-term life skills plans for clients,

  • develop and deliver a series of basic computer literacy skills orientations in a group setting,

  • develop, update, and prepare life skills manuals and handouts, and

  • assist with the planning and coordination of special events.

Required skills and qualifications:

  • meet Canada Summer Jobs criteria,

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment,

  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment,

  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations,

  • have experience and interest in working with newcomers and/or refugees,

  • have knowledge of computer technology,

  • have knowledge of community resource networks, and

  • fluency in more than one language is an asset.

All new employees must provide a police information check and vulnerable sector check dated not less than 90 days prior to the date of hire.

Hours: Temporary (8 weeks), Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week
