About the role

Main Function

You are responsible for pruning trees located on municipal properties, including parks, gardens, and medians. Your role directly contributes to the health and preservation of the tree canopy by respecting tree physiology and removing dead, harmful, or dangerous branches. You are also required to perform tree felling, cabling (bracing), and bolting work.

Schedule

  • Auxiliary position
  • 38 hours/week
  • Monday -Thursday, 6:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure site safety during all operations by installing appropriate signage and safety measures (traffic detours, hazard warnings for pedestrians, protection of property, etc.).
  • Climb trees using ladders and move through the canopy using ropes and climbing techniques.
  • Reinforce weak or low branches using rigid or flexible support systems (cabling/bracing).
  • Cut branches using pruning shears, saws, or other specialized tools, following recognized pruning and felling methods.
  • Repair tree tears and wounds using pruning knives and chisels.
  • Safely fell trees in accordance with established work methods.
  • Operate various equipment: aerial lift (bucket truck), truck with trailer, Hiab crane with grapple, wood chipper, stump grinder.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise apprentices to pass on best practices while ensuring safe, thorough, and standards-compliant work methods.
  • Perform any other related tasks in arboriculture.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in arboriculture and pruning.
  • Certificate of qualification in arboriculture (ARBO*) and a minimum of 3,000 hours of experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of pruning, trimming, felling, and chipping methods.
  • Strong understanding of tree physiology and species identification.
  • Good awareness of occupational risks and preventive measures.
  • Class 3 driver’s license.
  • ASP certification – General Health and Safety on construction sites.
  • Hold a valid ARBO arboriculture qualification certificate (journeyman card)*.
  • The employee will be responsible for maintaining their ARBO certification valid and up to date, and for completing all required training.

*As of June 8, in accordance with new Emploi-Québec requirements for performing arboriculture work.

Note You may be required to take a written competency test in French and English.
