Job Summary
The mission of Facilities Management is to provide the Dalhousie community with an inviting, safe and sustainable environment which supports and enhances an inspiring experience in learning, living, working and research. Facilities Management is an innovative team of motivated professionals recognized for excellence in facilities management. Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Facilities Management, the Director, Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for the Facilities Management (FM) Operations portfolio, ensuring the reliable, safe, and efficient delivery of services that support Dalhousie University’s academic, research, housing, and administrative mission.
Key Responsibilities
-
Provide strategic and operational leadership for Facilities Management operations, ensuring safe, reliable, and high‑quality service delivery aligned with institutional priorities across all campuses.

Lead and develop a high‑performing operations leadership team, fostering a respectful, inclusive, and safety‑focused workplace culture with strong accountability, engagement, and succession planning.

Establish and oversee performance management frameworks using data, analytics, and benchmarking to drive evidence‑based decision‑making, continuous improvement, and transparent reporting.

Ensure business continuity, operational resilience, and emergency preparedness through proactive risk management, preventive maintenance, and infrastructure reliability planning.

Provide responsible financial stewardship by overseeing operating budgets, resource allocation, and long‑term lifecycle and renewal planning to support sustainable operations.

Collaborate with senior leaders and campus partners, represent Facilities Management in governance forums, and support university‑wide initiatives as a key member of the senior leadership team.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
-
Undergraduate degree in engineering and ability to register as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Nova Scotia, with ten years of leadership experience in Facilities Management (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).

Proven leadership and managerial skills with strong financial and business planning abilities and experience managing multiple priorities.
-
Demonstrated growth in organizational and leadership responsibility.

Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills are essential.
Assets

Graduate study in a related area (Engineering or Business).

Leadership experience in a unionized environment.
