Job Description

Do you want to work with a team of exceptionally talented and bright people to make a real difference in the world? Are you detail-oriented, love the outdoors, thrive on wildlife biology and enjoy bringing wildlife conservation to life?

The technician will work with BC Gov (Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship) on a project that aims to reduce badger road mortality. The technician will primarily conduct badger trapping and telemetry, but may also work on culvert monitoring, assessments, culvert camera checks, and camera installations in culverts. Trapping shifts will be about 8-10 hours for 5 day work weeks that will include weekends. The work is split into two shifts each day – one crew member on an afternoon/evening shift and another crew member during a day. The technician will need to be able to work effectively and safely in a field pair.

This work helps support an understanding of badger passage through existing infrastructure that will help us improve badger passability along Hwy 1 and Hwy 5 to plan design interventions (e.g. fencing) that will reduce road mortality. We will be live-trapping badgers around these mortality hotspots to GPS-harness them to understand how they cross the roads and the surrounding landscape connectivity by monitoring their movements.

On days the technician is not in the field, they will work on repairing field gear, data organization/cleaning, and classifying images from the camera trap arrays. The technician will primarily trap badgers until end of July. They may also conduct culvert camera checks on the highway and potentially culvert assessments. If they have the skills and there is time, they may be asked to write an end of season summary report of the data they collected.
