About the role

Job Title: R&D Research Scientist - Advanced Electrolyte Synthesis

**Location:**Saint-Germain-de-Grantham, Québec, Canada

Company: Annexair Energy Division

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated R&D scientist with expertise in non-aqueous electrolyte synthesis, purification, and advanced characterization under strict inert-atmosphere conditions to join our growing research team. This position offers the opportunity to work on an innovative project focused on designing high-performance electrolyte systems for aluminum battery chemistry. This role requires hands-on laboratory expertise in glovebox synthesis, rigorous moisture/oxygen control, and specialized purification methods such as liquid-liquid extraction to remove reactive contaminants. The position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to integrate electrolyte innovations with other cell components.

Key Responsabilities

  • Design, synthesize, and optimize non-aqueous battery electrolytes, including tailored additives to enhance stability and performance.
  • Develop and optimize laboratory-scale synthesis methods and protocols to produce high-purity liquid and solid precursors, with rigorous control over air/moisture sensitivity, as well as Karl Fischer titration.
  • Develop and execute drying and purification workflows, including vacuum drying, activated molecular sieves for water removal, solid-phase purification using basic ion-exchange or adsorption media, and acid scavenging strategies.
  • Liquid-liquid extraction methods for selectively removing chloride or acidic contaminants. • Perform speciation and compositional analyses via NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, UV-Vis, and other advanced spectroscopy.
  • Interpret analytical and characterization data, correlate findings with electrochemical performance, and communicate results clearly through reports and presentations.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer, including fundamental process insights and recommendations for equipment modifications.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and best practices for handling corrosive, hygroscopic, air-sensitive, and hazardous chemicals.

Required Profile

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline, with a strong focus on non-aqueous chemistry.

Other Qualifications & Skills

  • Proven experience with air-sensitive synthesis and glovebox techniques.
  • Strong expertise in purification methods, particularly liquid–liquid extraction and advanced drying procedures.
  • Experience in advanced analytical and characterization techniques, including NMR, XPS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, etc.
  • Experience with Karl Fischer titration and rigorous oxygen/moisture monitoring protocols.
  • Familiarity with Lewis acid systems is an asset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an innovative mindset for designing robust synthesis and purification strategies.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively in a multidisciplinary R&D environment.
  • Excellent documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Prior experience in battery electrolyte development or electrochemical systems (asset).
  • Experience with electrochemical testing methods and correlating chemical properties with cell performance (asset).
