Located in, Labrador, Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) is dedicated to supporting the educational journey of the Innu Nation. With two schools in Natuashish and Sheshatshiu, MTIE serves approximately 1,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, fostering a culturally grounded and student-centered learning environment.

About The Role

We are seeking an Elementary Teacher to join our instructional team. The Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and inclusive education to students. Working closely with school leadership, support staff, and parents, the Teacher creates a safe and welcoming classroom environment that promotes the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of every child.

This position plays a key role in shaping foundational learning experiences, fostering a lifelong love of learning, and ensuring that curriculum delivery is respectful and reflective of the local community, including Innu culture and values.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Delivery: Plan and deliver activities that facilitate active learning and align with provincial curriculum standards while differentiating instruction to meet diverse needs. Cultural Integration: Integrate Innu history, culture, and land-based learning opportunities into daily lessons to resonate with Innu students. Classroom Management: Establish a positive and safe classroom environment; guide students in social-emotional development, conflict resolution, and peer cooperation. Assessment & Reporting: Regularly evaluate academic development through formative and summative assessments; maintain accurate records and prepare detailed progress reports. Collaboration: Build respectful relationships with parents and caregivers; collaborate with instructional resource teachers and community members to support students with individualized education plans (IEPs). Technology: Utilize modern educational tools and Google Workspace to enhance curriculum delivery and administrative efficiency.

Qualifications

Education & Certification

Bachelor of Education from a recognized post-secondary institution. Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Teaching Certificate (or confirmed eligibility to obtain one).

Mandatory Requirements

Legal entitlement to work in Canada. Provision of a clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (current within the last 6 months).

Experience

Proven experience teaching in a primary or elementary school setting (including practicum experience for recent graduates). Experience working in northern, rural, or Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset.

Knowledge And Skills

Thorough understanding of child development and pedagogical best practices. Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment. Demonstrated cultural competence, including awareness of Innu culture and values; fluency in Innu-Aimun is considered an asset.

Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) proudly serves the Innu Nation in Labrador. There are two Innu schools in the communities Sheshatshiu and Natuaushish. MTIE Innu schools provide access to education that honours Innu language, traditions, and culture.

Our logo depicts a MITSHIKUN. This is a traditional Innu tool used to clean hides. The mitshikun represents the strength, resourcefulness, determination and practicality of the Innu people.

In 2009, Mamu Tshishkutamashutau Innu Education (MTIE) was founded to have jurisdiction over the education of Innu in Labrador in order to create First Nations schools and curriculums that honour and celebrate Innu culture, Innu traditions, and Innu-aimun (language).

MTIE is governed by a board of trustees that is selected by the Chiefs and Councils of the Mushuau Innu in Natuashish and the Sheshatshiu Innu. The board of trustees and the administration of MTIE serve two schools, the Mushuau Innu Natuashish School, and the Sheshatshiu Innu School.
