Under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Apooyak’ii / Tiffany Hind Bull-Prete, the Graduate Research Assistant will play a key role in supporting a community-led research project focused on the preservation and organization of oral histories shared by Kainai Elders. This work will involve the transcription of recorded interviews, as well as the organization, categorization, and thematic analysis of the stories that emerge from these conversations.

The project is grounded in Indigenous research methodologies and honors the knowledge systems, worldviews, and lived experiences of Kainai Elders. The research assistant will be expected to work with cultural sensitivity, humility, and a deep respect for the protocols and relationships that guide this work.

Research Duties:

  • Transcribe audio-recorded interviews.
  • Assist with categorizing and organizing stories and themes from interviews.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respectful engagement with culturally sensitive material.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive records with care.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with Dr. Apooyak’ii / Tiffany Hind Bull-Prete to review progress and discuss findings.
  • Provide weekly updates on research progress and milestones achieved.

Position Qualifications:

  • Transcription and Research Skills: Experience with transcription and/or qualitative research methods.
  • Organizational Abilities: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Blackfoot Language Knowledge: A basic knowledge of the Blackfoot language is an asset, though not required.
  • Respect for Indigenous Knowledge: Commitment to ethical research practices and working respectfully with Elders and Indigenous knowledge.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to maintain accuracy and consistency when translating, summarizing, and organizing data.
  • Commitment to Ethical Research: Awareness of the sensitivity of residential school records and the importance of respectful handling.
