About the role
Enedym Assembly Technician Co-op (Electric Motors & Vehicles)
Enedym is a startup from McMaster University focused on developing electric motor and propulsion technologies. We specialize in innovative switched reluctance motor solutions, aiming to revolutionize energy systems for a cleaner, more efficient future. Join our dynamic team to be part of driving meaningful change towards sustainability in transportation and energy.
About This Role
We are looking for a dynamic, knowledgeable, and highly hands-on co-op student to join our team and play a critical role in building our technology. The candidate will focus on the assembly, integration, and testing of our cutting-edge electric motors and electric vehicle systems. This role is ideal for someone who loves building, tinkering, and bringing new designs to life. You will be a key member of our manufacturing and engineering teams, working directly on prototype and production hardware.
You will get an opportunity to have a significant impact on our operations as we scale up. We expect you to be a dynamic team player who is meticulous, safety-conscious, and curious about how things are built.
Job Description
Join our team at Enedym as an Assembly Technician Co-op and get diverse, hands-on experience building the future of electric propulsion. This role will focus on the precision assembly of prototype and production electric motors, building and integrating custom wire harnesses, supporting system-level testing, and assisting with our in-house electric vehicle conversion projects.
If you have a strong mechanical aptitude, love working with your hands, and enjoy collaborating in a team to build clean energy technologies, we invite you to apply and be part of our growth at Enedym.
Responsibilities
- Perform precision mechanical assembly of switched reluctance motors and their sub-assemblies, following engineering instructions and drawings.
- Provide direct hands-on support for electric vehicle conversions, including system layout, mounting of motors and controllers, and integrating Enedym’s components.
- Build, route, and install custom wire harnesses and high-voltage/low-voltage cabling systems.
- Assist technicians and engineers in setting up and operating test equipment for motor and vehicle validation.
- Support the fabrication of brackets, fixtures, and mounting hardware using common workshop tools.
- Perform quality inspections on components, sub-assemblies, and final products to ensure they meet specifications.
- Work with the engineering team to identify and document assembly challenges, suggesting improvements for manufacturability.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workshop environment, strictly adhering to all safety protocols (including high-voltage safety).
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives on the shop floor.
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and solve build or integration problems as they arise.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Mechanical, Mechatronics, Automotive, Electromechanical, or skilled trades (e.g., Millwright, Automotive Technician) post-secondary program.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent hands-on skills with a variety of hand tools, power tools (drills, grinders, etc.), and workshop equipment.
- A passion for building, assembling, or repairing complex systems (e.g., automotive work, robotics, machine assembly, personal projects).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and electrical wiring diagrams.
- Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work.
- Experience with wire harness assembly, connector crimping, and soldering is a strong asset.
- Understanding of and commitment to a safety-first culture, especially when working with high-voltage systems and rotating machinery.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with technicians and engineers.
- A proactive, "can-do" attitude and a strong desire to learn.
A Note on Experience
