The Ministry of the Attorney General, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of the Solicitor General, has an immediate opportunity for a senior counsel to provide representation and legal and strategic advice to senior executives and members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and to other ministry clients.

About the job
This role requires counsel to provide legal services to the Ontario Provincial Police, a division within the Ministry of the Solicitor General (“Ministry”). Counsel may also provide legal services to other Ministry clients including: Correctional Services, Public Safety Division, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Centre of Forensic Sciences, Animal Welfare Services and the ministry's Strategic Policy and Infrastructure Divisions as well as other corporate divisions and ministry agencies.
Duties may include:
• Providing strategic legal advice and support to the Commissioner of the OPP, Deputy Commissioners, and other senior members of the OPP.
• Advising and representing OPP clients in litigation before courts and administrative tribunals in a variety of matters including: applications to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario; police misconduct proceedings; coroner's inquests; various applications to the courts, including judicial reviews.
• Advising and representing clients at all levels within the divisions and branches of this diverse client Ministry.
• Providing advice and legal assistance to support the operational, policy and legislative requirements of the Ministry.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
• Demonstrated experience and expertise briefing, advising and representing executives and senior managers, particularly in the law enforcement and public safety context.
• Legal experience advising and representing clients in litigation before courts and administrative tribunals in a variety of matters.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation, including: the Human Rights Code, Coroners Act, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, Community Safety and Policing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Statutory Powers and Procedure Act, Judicial Review Procedure Act and the Public Service of Ontario Act
• Proven advocacy skills.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines with changing and competing demands.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring and leading teams.
• Demonstrated strength as a collegial and resolution-oriented team player that can build strong and effective working relationships with client, colleagues, and other counsel.
