Job Summary:
Working with regular feedback from the community in which you work as well as in collaboration with community members and partners, the Community House Coordinator assesses needs, builds strategies, and responds to address their concerns. While working within the community, the Community House Coordinator builds community service capacity, oversees the administration of services within the community and oversees the work of the community workers, program assistants, students, and volunteers.
The position conducts needs assessments, builds/maintains partnerships and coordinates, develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates programs. The coordinator works in collaboration with other teams across PQCHC to ensure integration of services and cohesion across the organization.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in health or social sciences or an equivalent combination of education and significant related experience
- Three to five years’ experience in community development/health promotion
- Experience in a leadership role and supervising employee and volunteer teams
- Working knowledge of community development values, principles, and the political process
- Experience with, and sensitivity to, minority groups, people of different ages and income groups, and an awareness of the issues that affect these groups
- Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
- Proven abilities in community organizing, conflict resolution, and advocacy
- Ability to work during both regular and extended hours of operation in locations identified by the Centre
- Training and experience in group facilitation
- Knowledge of English essential; knowledge of a second language commonly used in the community will be considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required
- Proficiency in computers and various software applications
Job Specific Responsibilities:
Community Development and Outreach
- Identifies community priorities through relationship building, needs assessments, focus groups, and forums with community members and provides appropriate linkages with broader community resource base
- Oversees implementation of programs, services, and community initiatives that promote community ownership of decisions
- Acts as a resource person to and advocate for individuals, groups, and the community
- Facilitates community action, promotes social awareness, and builds capacity of residents to engage in effective advocacy strategies
- Develops and implements community development and outreach strategies to reach community members
House administration
- Serves as a primary contact for and is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Community House
- Develops personal work plans in consultation with manager and regularly updates goals and targets
- Responsible for management and execution of allocated budgets, keeps records of expenses for reporting purposes
- Responsible for the house programming schedule and delegates tasks as needed to employees
- Represent Community Houses by sitting as active members of PQ and external partnership committees
- Attend relevant department meetings and delegate employees to take lead on in-house meetings
- Responsible for communicating key information and providing regular updates to team members and department employees and partners as appropriate
Program Administration
- Oversees the planning, implementation and evaluation of all programs and services (including food security, as appropriate)
- Track data for surveys and outcomes for reporting purposes
- Ensures team is properly equipped and set up to provide successful programming
- Prepare and provide to management team, and other applicable bodies, reports of programs and services, including recommendations for future improvement and any current changes
- Researches and applies for resources and grants as applicable to their communities’ needs
Crisis Intervention:
- Works with appropriate entities and partners to implement a crisis response as needed and completes incident reports
- Identifying appropriate post incident response in collaboration with community and partners (for ex. first aid, mental health resources, food support, nonviolence crisis intervention etc.)
- Identify training gaps and provide support to employees with direct crisis intervention, conflict management and emergency response protocols as well as debrief with team
- Liaises with other community and organization partners and provides appropriate resources and referrals to clients to assist them with crisis resolution
- Communicates important information to all stakeholders including senior management
Supervision of employees, students, and volunteers
- Oversees and supervises the work of the Community House team; responsible for providing ongoing support i.e., orientation, developing and monitoring work plans, training, performance management and supervision
- Responsible to review and approve timesheets, vacation, paid and unpaid time off for their direct reports
Establish and maintain links and develop partnerships with other resources
- Works with the Coalition of Community Houses, Ottawa Community Housing as well as other broad-based community networks to build capacity, advocacy, and political action as appropriate
- Works with partner agencies to advocate for services/resources as identified by the community
- Participates in networking and community relations activities on behalf of the organization
- Works closely with internal PQCHC employees to develop integrated strategies to resource community members
- Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with government agencies, community groups, funding sources, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization

Founded by community members in 1979, we are one of about 60 non-profit community health centers across Ontario. We are run by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 12 community members elected at our annual meeting.
Growing With Our Community:
In 1979 we opened our doors with 4 staff. Today, we have over 347 full and part time employees serving our local community and over 400 volunteers.

We work in partnership with individuals, families and communities to achieve their full potential, paying particular attention to those who are most vulnerable and at risk.
