About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Controller to join our leadership team and take full ownership of the accounting function. This is a pivotal moment to join us: we are bringing our accounting function in-house for the first time, actively pursuing non-dilutive funding opportunities to accelerate growth, and preparing the organization for the next stage of growth.

The Controller will take full ownership of accounting and finance operations, striking a balance between hands-on execution and strategic oversight. This role will be critical in ensuring compliance across jurisdictions, supporting manufacturing and inventory costing, strengthening cash flow management, and building financial systems that scale.

As the company’s first in-house finance hire, this role offers the opportunity to help build a team, prepare the company for audits and investor due diligence, and directly influence strategic decisions. For the right candidate, this can evolve into a CFO-track role.

What you'll own

  • Lead the transition from outsourced to in-house accounting.Manage full-cycle accounting: AR, AP, payroll, month-end close, reconciliations.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with ASPE.

  • Ensure compliance with CRA and Revenu Québec regulations, as well as U.S. tax reporting for subsidiaries.

  • Support audit preparation, regulatory reporting, and investor due diligence.

    Inventory & Cost Accounting

    • Develop and maintain cost accounting systems for manufacturing operations.
    • Track and report on inventory movement and valuation (raw materials, WIP, finished goods).
    • Analyze margins, variances, and product-level costing.

    Cross-Border & Revenue Management

    • Oversee financial aspects of U.S. sales: FX management, state-level sales tax, and revenue recognition.
    • Reconcile DTC e-commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, Stripe) with accounting systems.
    • Support expansion into future international markets, including VAT and multi-country compliance.

Cash Flow, Funding & Strategic Finance

    • Own cash flow forecasting, treasury management, and working capital optimization.
    • Partner with leadership to identify, apply for, and manage non-dilutive funding opportunities (e.g., grants, SR&ED, tax credits).
    • Collaborate on budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
    • Develop and monitor key financial and operational KPIs.

    Systems, Controls & Team-Building

    • Implement scalable accounting/ERP systems, as well as process automation.
    • Design and enforce robust internal controls, policies, and procedures.
    • Build and mentor a small finance team as the company scales.

What we are looking for

Requirements

  • CPA designation (Quebec/Canada).
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including controllership or senior roles.
  • Background in a product-based company with manufacturing and inventory.
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian accounting and tax regulations.
  • Experience with cross-border operations (Canada–U.S.), including sales tax and FX.
  • Proficiency with accounting, AP, and ERP systems.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (AP, Accounting and ERP Systems)

Great advantages (but not required):

  • Startup or scale-up environment experience.
  • Familiarity with U.S. e-commerce platforms, regulations, and tools.
  • Bilingual (English & French).
  • Knowledge of ASPE.
  • Experience with grant applications, SR&ED, or other non-dilutive funding programs.
  • Exposure to multi-country operations and VAT.

Why you’ll love working at Eli:

  • You’ll work with a group of talented and mission-driven people eager to improve lifelong health at scale.
  • You’ll be part of the core team developing and commercializing the first product that monitors hormonal data daily and over a lifetime.
  • You’ll join at the early-stage startup phase and have a wide-reaching impact in a constantly evolving and fast-paced environment.
  • You’ll be part of a small (<25 people), high-performing, and diverse team where everything you do results in tangible impact and shapes the company’s trajectory.
  • You’ll be in an environment where people drive their own work, think creatively about open-ended problems, and solve them proactively.
  • You’ll get health insurance (medical, dental, vision, and more) to ensure you and your family stay physically and mentally at your best.
  • You’ll have flexibility over your schedule and vacations. We seek to hire great people, then give them the autonomy and space they need to achieve their goals.
  • Although our office and R&D facilities are in Montreal, we have a distributed team. We prioritize asynchronous workflows and minimize meetings to focus on the work itself.
  • You and your +1 will have unlimited free access to the Bota Bota spa in Montreal to recharge.
