This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Fuel Handling Systems Design Engineer based in Canada. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the design and development of advanced nuclear reactor systems with a focus on fuel handling technologies. The successful candidate will lead complex mechanical system design activities, supporting the delivery of safe, reliable, and innovative plant solutions. Accountabilities
The Senior Fuel Handling Systems Design Engineer will lead the design, integration, and qualification activities for fuel handling systems and related mechanical process systems within advanced reactor projects. The role requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure designs meet technical, regulatory, and performance requirements. Design nuclear fuel handling systems and subsystems from initial requirements definition through final design delivery. Coordinate and integrate engineering analyses, including thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, heat transfer, and other technical evaluations into plant designs. Provide mechanical system design direction related to thermal and fluid requirements. Ensure the appropriate application of engineering codes and standards, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, and other applicable industry requirements. Provide technical guidance on nuclear and non-nuclear design standards and engineering practices. Analyze and allocate regulatory requirements and standards for complex mechanical and process system designs. Support project planning activities and maintain alignment between system design schedules and overall plant delivery milestones. Develop and manage system design documentation, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D models, interface drawings, and engineering specifications. Collaborate with mechanical, instrumentation and controls, civil, nuclear, and other engineering disciplines to define system requirements and interfaces. Provide technical oversight for supplier activities, ensuring delivery of required documentation, technical reviews, and engineering outputs. Establish and maintain system requirements documents, engineering design specifications, and technical design packages. Develop and support qualification testing programs, including test planning, execution oversight, results evaluation, and reporting. Prepare and review technical documents such as System Design Descriptions, Interface Control Documents, and engineering design reports. Support licensing activities, including documentation related to safety analysis reports. Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of plant system and subsystem designs.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a senior mechanical engineering professional with extensive experience designing complex systems, preferably within nuclear or highly regulated industries. They should have strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to independently lead multidisciplinary engineering efforts. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited university. 10+ years of direct experience with mechanical systems design and engineering. Proven experience designing complex mechanical systems, structures, and equipment, particularly nuclear fuel handling systems or similar advanced systems. Experience with nuclear reactors, fuel handling process systems, or comparable high-performance engineering environments. Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, system integration, and equipment qualification processes. Experience working with high-temperature systems and multidisciplinary engineering integration is highly preferred. Knowledge of ASME Section III requirements. Experience applying quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001 within engineering design activities. Ability to interpret and apply industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements. Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills. Ability to manage multiple complex tasks while balancing competing technical objectives and constraints. Self-motivated approach with the ability to lead engineering activities with minimal supervision. Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams. High level of integrity, professionalism, and commitment to technical excellence.
