Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
This position provides required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service to custodial standards, ensuring that the building environment is healthy and comfortable.
Accountabilities:
- Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors
- Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces
- Clean the washroom facilities and shower rooms
- Cleans offices, classrooms, and other rooms
- Supplies toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items
- Empties trash bins and disposes of trash in the garbage compactor or garbage bins
- Cleans, sterilizes, and/or disinfects areas and/or equipment
- Spot cleans carpets and performs general carpet cleaning, as required
- Performs more extensive cleaning, carpet cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance during non-peak programming periods
- Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s) and on janitorial carts
- Follows established procedures and documentation for inventory tracking
- Informs the Custodial Supervisor of general repairs and maintenance items required
- Lifts and moves furniture as requested
- Works independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standards
- Attends specialized work training when scheduled
- Performs laundry service when requested
- Performs other related duties that interface with program needs and the mission of The Salvation Army Community Services (Calgary), as assigned by the Director of Facilities
Meetings:
- Attends meetings as requested by the Facility Manager or the Custodial Supervisor
Annual Responsibilities:
- Participates in annual performance evaluation
- Attends mandatory training as scheduled
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary, full-time position at 40 hours per week until May 18, 2026.
- The weekly schedule Thursday, Friday, Monday: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Days off: Tuesday, Wednesday
- The work environment is typically in the entire facility and property designated
- Required to lift more than 20 pounds
- Work under disagreeable conditions such as handling garbage, isolation and monotony, odours, exposure to toxic chemicals, dealing with angry people, verbal abuse, physical attacks by others, exposure to infectious diseases, exposure to toxic chemicals (e.g. toxic spills), moving objects, sharp objects (e.g. needle pricking), electrical hazards, repetitive strain injuries (e.g. back, wrist), various weather conditions, and washrooms (i.e. human waste)
- There will be little to no travel required.
Education and Experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications, and Certifications:
- Completion of High School or Equivalent
- An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
- WHMIS training
- Respect in the Workplace training
- Abuse Prevention training
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures
- Ability and willingness to provide a current Certification in Standard First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent intervention training is an asset.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry), and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work, and fine motor skills
- Ability to use cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, and cleaning compounds
- Moderate to high attention when using motorized equipment, handling hazardous chemicals, and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment
- Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures
- Background in handling, mixing, and safely using cleaning chemicals
- A strong sense of initiative and responsibility in working alone
- General knowledge of workplace safety practices, policies, and procedures (e.g., equipment safety, hazard communication, personal protective equipment use) to ensure performance of safe work practices.
- Required to lift more than 20 lbs
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $20.62 with a maximum of $24.74.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
