About the role

The Department of Pediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Section of Newborn Critical Care invites applications for a Research Assistant who can help engage with our clinical sites and stakeholders to facilitate quality data collection and achievement of research deliverables for an ongoing multi- site clinical trial.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the coordination and administration of research projects
  • In collaboration with the PI, develop the structure, objectives, and policies of the research project, evaluating research activities and recommending improvements when appropriate
  • Working closely with the PI in the coordination of project resources
  • Monitor research funding and budgeting resources, collaborating with the PI and Research Accounting
  • Maintain research study binders with regulatory documents and patient data
  • Keep electronic records of all study material including protocols, informed consent forms, questionnaires, renewals, modifications, etc.
  • Develop strong and supportive relationships with the research team in all participating sites
  • Schedule research related meetings with the site investigators and other stakeholders
  • Abstract data from electronic medical record system (Connect Care) to REDCap database
  • Ability to modify REDCap database as required
  • Ability to perform quality control process for the study data
  • Ability to perform basic analysis of the study data and support the production of research related reports for various purposes
  • Provide support for smaller research projects to determine understanding of a novel intervention
  • Develop project timelines, monitor and control of project deadlines and outcomes, and closeout of projects
  • Provide research support, produce reports, and administer research policies and procedures

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the health sciences disciplines is required

  • Master's Degree in a health sciences discipline is desirable

  • Specialized certifications - TCPS 2 and GCP are required

  • Experience in neonatal intensive care or pediatric research or clinical care is highly desirable

  • Minimum 3 years of related experience

  • Friendly and engaging personality who can rapidly build rapport with various stakeholders in the study participating centre

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Experience in project management with ability to plan and direct research and administrative activities within a team environment

  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures

  • Certification or experience in Quality Improvement and Implementation Science is desirable

  • Ability to solve complex problems which may include implementation of innovative ideas

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) is required

  • Experience with REDCap data abstraction system is required including experience in building and modifying REDCap forms

  • Experience with statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, or STATA is desirable

  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (e.g. Tri Council).
    Demonstrated proficiency in resource planning and grant application process

  • Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports and conducting literature reviews for the purpose of presentation and publication

  • Understanding of safety codes, technical equipment, and quality assurance procedures, as related to the research program

  • Fluent in English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing

  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable

  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills while exercising professional judgement within established guidelines is critical
