Position Description
The Informatics Nurse in the division of Haem/Onc/BMT/CT uses expertise in nursing, Epic and other clinical computer applications and understanding of the SickKids organizational culture to provide leadership and support in the field of informatics as it relates to the delivery of care for patients with cancer and hematological disorders. The Informatics Nurse will collaborate with division staff to ensure the achievement of strategic goals as they relate to decision-making, education, implementation, ongoing evaluation, maintenance and upgrading of treatment plans, standard of care plans and programs and other relevant clinical and research practice guidelines and policies and ensuring that Epic and other clinical information systems and technologies are effectively used throughout the division. The Informatics Nurse integrates research into practice and uses critical thinking and problem-solving skills to guide evidence-based decisions in advocating for positive patient outcomes.
Here's What You'll Get to Do:
Role Activities:
- Develops, reviews, implements and maintains all Epic order tools required for the HaemOnc/BMT/CT program. This includes treatment plan (TP), Supportive Care Plan (SCP), Therapy Plan (ThP), Order Set (OS) and Smart Set (SS) used for Standard of Care (SOC), Research trial and clinical practice guidelines (CPG).
- Addresses any revisions required to the Epic orders as a result of staff identification of discrepancy, safety reports, practice changes, new Epic functionality, research protocol amendments, and changes to SOC or CPG
- Involved in ongoing assessment of workflows impacted by Epic TP/SCP/OS/SS/THP (i.e., nursing, pharmacy, Clinical Trial Support Unit (CTSU), lab) and ensures TP/SCPs are updated in a timely manner, ensuring that the clinical and research teams have the support they need to update patients' existing orders on Epic, as needed
- Develops, reviews, and implements SOC plans for all programs across the division. This includes assisting with the creation of new Standard of Care plans, maintaining over 105+ SOC plans to ensure that they are up to date and are congruent with Hospital and Department Policies and Procedures and leads regular review (biannual) by the Sections to ensure that the SOC plans reflect the current evidence-based care
- Develops and maintains program Policies and Procedures related to development of, selection and documentation of treatment plans for Haematology Oncology Patients
- Maintains external SOC library SharePoint page for access by other pediatric cancer programs across Canada. Grants access to page to approved sites, ensuring that all cancer programs across Canada have the updated SOCs documents in a timely manner.
- Maintains Haem/Onc/BMT/CT Chemotherapy Administration Guidelines and updates them on an ongoing basis based on divisional guidelines and polices at the direction of the divisional therapeutic safety committee.
- Assists Epic end users across the division as required through review of Individualized treatment plan orders entered in Epic when no prebuilt Beacon protocols are available, problem solves for non-standard order entry, provides assistance with correcting TP when issues arise, and helps investigate ordering issues when they arise (individual queries/safety reports).
- Provides leadership by advocating for the development of best practices in informatics through acting as a consultant for various projects related to clinical computer systems, including Epic and any other relevant computer systems.
- Participates in divisional committees, task forces and meetings in a liaison and consultative role to ensure a thorough knowledge of hospital requirements for information/data and Epic functionalities and workflows to support clinical, research, and other health professional-related activities. Committee participation may include Haem/Onc/BMT/CT Safety Committee, divisional Beacon ALT Committee, CTSU Steering Committee, Section specific rounds, and more.
- Advises on and recommends the content and layout of reports, treatment plans, standard of care documents and all the other relevant documents and Epic order tools to meet clinical requirements.
- Participates in analysis, testing and implementation of future upgrades and enhancements to clinical systems. Collaborate with Beacon Epic team to ensure implementation of new Epic processes and workflows meets the division's needs
- Maintains awareness of the hospital and IS strategic directions and anticipates related user needs.
- Reviews practices and processes to ensure that stakeholder information/data requirements are understood and met.
- Assists with analysis, design, and testing for changes required on patient information systems.
- Recognizes and articulates technical constraints of systems versus user requirements.
- Provides education and re-training in order to prepare staff for new or updated clinical computer applications or implementation of new Epic processes and workflows or when knowledge gaps are identified for existing Epic processes' as required.
- Advocates for clinical informatics activities that will promote and further the goals of the sub-specialty of nursing informatics.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of the programs SharePoint site.
- Other duties as required or as requested by operational or professional manager/director.
Leadership:
- Acts as a skilled liaison between Epic users in the division, Epic Beacon, and any other IS staff or other teams, as needed
- Provides leadership to influence change within the organization to ensure that SickKids upholds leading practices associated with clinical and corporate computer applications.
- Demonstrates the ability to effectively facilitate change.
- Provides consultation to other interdisciplinary teams outside the division, or other cancer programs outside of SickKids as needed.
- Collaborates and consults with internal stakeholders to ensure that computer applications reflect and support practices.
- Collaborates and consults with external stakeholders.
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates commitment to and support of organizational initiatives and values.
- Accountable for aligning activities and performance with strategic goals and objectives of SickKids.

- Participates in professional development activities that may include:
- Attending and/or speaking at local, provincial, national and international informatics conferences to gain insight into informatics best practices for potential integration into current practice at SickKids.
- Engaging in discussions with internal and external colleagues and organizations to exchange knowledge and expertise in informatics
- Membership in hospital committees
Here's What You'll Need
- Minimum Education Required: BScN (or equivalent) preferred
- Professional Registration Required: College of Nursing of Ontario
- Previous Job-Related Experience Required: Oncology experience and at minimum 5 years of experience/clinical practice experience. Research and Bone Marrow Transplant experience are an asset. SickKids experience is preferred.
- Special Skills/Aptitudes Required:
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
