The Lead Material Handler will be responsible for leading the day‑to‑day execution of material handling activities on this major construction project. Working under the direction of the Project Materials Lead and Construction Management, this role coordinates receiving, unloading, staging, storage, preservation, and work‑face delivery activities while providing direct task‑level supervision to Material Handlers.

This role also provides front‑line safety leadership for all material handling activities, ensuring personnel are competent, hazards are assessed, and work is executed in accordance with approved safe work practices, site safety requirements, and project procedures.

Work Conditions

  • Site‑based role on a major industrial construction project in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Shift schedule: Monday – Friday (48 hour week)
  • Travel and LOA are not provided – local candidates only.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s licence and have reliable transportation
  • May be required to operate or coordinate material handling equipment (e.g., forklift, telehandler, cranes)

Key Responsibilities

Site Material Handling Leadership

  • Acts as the primary on‑site lead for material handling execution activities.
  • Assigns daily work, sets priorities, and provides direct supervision to Material Handlers.
  • Ensures tasks are planned and executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Coordinates labour, equipment, and laydown resources to support site requirements.
  • Mentors and trains material handling personnel to promote consistent execution and safety awareness.

Safety Leadership & Safe Work Practices

  • Leads and delivers materials‑specific toolbox talks, including preparation of topics relevant to current and upcoming work.
  • Completes, reviews, and verifies Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs) for material handling tasks prior to work execution.
  • Performs regular FLHA audits and reviews to confirm hazards, controls, and conditions remain valid.
  • Ensures Material Handlers are competent, trained, and authorized to perform assigned tasks, including operation of material handling equipment where applicable.
  • Actively verifies that Material Handlers are following approved safe work practices, procedures, and site safety rules.
  • Intervenes immediately to correct unsafe acts or conditions and escalates safety concerns, near misses, or incidents through the appropriate site channels.
  • Reinforces safety expectations through coaching, mentoring, and continuous field engagement.

Receiving, Storage & Preservation

  • Coordinates and executes material receiving, unloading, staging, and storage in accordance with approved site procedures and laydown plans.
  • Conducts and oversees physical inspections of incoming materials to identify overages, shortages, or damage (UOSD).
  • Reviews and logs documentation deficiencies (e.g., MTRs, CRNs, packing slips).
  • Ensures materials are stored, preserved, and protected in accordance with manufacturer, project, and quality requirements.
  • Provides advance notification to Quality and Preservation personnel for materials requiring special handling or ongoing preservation.
  • Plans, plots, and manages laydown areas to maintain access, identification, traceability, and housekeeping standards.
  • Coordinates unloading of heavy, oversized, or complex loads using approved lift and safety plans.

Systems, Documentation & Traceability

  • Ensures accurate and timely entry of MRRs, OSD/UOSD records, photographs, and location updates in the project materials management system.
  • Maintains accurate logs for material traceability, quality documentation, and preservation status.
  • Coordinates with the Material Controller to ensure physical material movements and locations remain aligned with system records.

Construction & Planning Interface

  • Coordinates material handling activities to support construction sequencing, work‑face priorities, and IWPs.
  • Participates in look‑ahead planning, coordination, and site meetings as required.
  • Coordinates picking and delivery of materials to support work packages in a timely manner.
  • Supports planning and execution of surplus material management and demobilization activities during project close‑out.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–10 years experience in construction material handling or site materials execution.
  • Previous experience in a lead, foreman, or supervisory role strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Material receiving and inspection processes
    • Laydown planning and material preservation requirements
    • UOSD management and traceability
    • Safe work practices for material handling activities
  • Experience with digital materials management systems (e.g., SiteSense, Jovix, or equivalent) considered an asset.
  • Comfortable using tablets, computers, MS Excel, and email communication tools.
  • Prior experience on large industrial, oil & gas, or chemical projects preferred.
