About the role
This posting is for multiple seasonal full-time positions for up to 4 months (May to August).
Public Works Labourers will assist the Transportation Engineering and Operations department during the 2026 summer season.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the construction and repair of roads, fences, signs, sidewalks, retaining walls, etc. (includes brush removal, piling, painting, and other related duties)
- Operate ½ ton and 1-ton trucks; may be required to transport tools and equipment using small trailers
- Operate hand and/or power tools and light equipment such as shovels, rakes, brooms, weed whippers, drills, backpack blowers, etc.
- Perform flag person duties to direct traffic through work or construction sites
- Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks
- Complete routine site, shop and vehicle clean-up
- Clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operation; perform minor repairs during operation and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisor
- Maintain on-site communication with work crew members and good public relations with the general public, suppliers and other departments
- Attend daily safety meetings to gain knowledge of standard operating procedures and safe work plans; may participate in hazard assessments and incident reporting, as required
- Carry out written or oral instructions and maintain records/work reports of assigned tasks Undertake work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and County policies, standards, and procedures
Qualifications and Skills:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Related work experience in a construction or municipal environment would be an asset
- Experience operating and servicing hand tools, power tools, and light motor vehicles is an asset
- Basic knowledge of OH&S regulations, safe work practices, and precautions (including the use of personal protection, safety equipment, resources, and hazard awareness)
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate leadership skills; capacity to provide and follow directions
- Capable of carrying out both verbal and written instruction and maintain concentration and mental alertness for extended periods of time
- Ability to communicate and interact in a positive manner with supervisors, co-workers, and residents Basic computer skills and mobile device literacy
Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Ability to work in all weather conditions including adverse weather, as well as in remote rural areas Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50lbs.), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
