About the role

  • NATURE AND SCOPE

Registered Nurses (also known as RNs) provide a wide variety of nursing services within a defined scope of practice to TRC clients. They observe, assess, monitor and document Client symptoms, reactions and progress. They administer medications and injections, assist nurse practitioners/physicians during procedures and provide education and information to Clients, families, caregivers and TRC staff.
Registered nurses use critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills to provide compassionate and safe Client care. Registered nurses teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of their Clients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.
The RN’s act as charge nurse when on duty and play a key leadership role in the delivery of an integrated and holistic approach to client health care, health promotion and health maintenance requirements. They provide expert knowledge, guidance and mentorship to students and other health care workers including LPNs and HCAs. They work with inpatient addiction treatment Clients and families and collaborate with other nursing teams, Nurse practitioners/physicians, health care aides, therapists and administrative staff and managers during the course of their work.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Conducting initial intake, nursing assessment and triage level of required care by the responsible provider.
  • Psychiatric evaluations for new Clients.
  • Assessing Clients daily for level of physical, emotional, and social stability
  • Offering guidance throughout treatment for better goal attainment
  • Monitoring for change in mood or demeanor, recognition of behavior patterns, behavior changes and communicating with the interdisciplinary team at Thorpe.
  • Develops care plans and communicates with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Intervening with de-escalation techniques to lead the Client back to safety and stability.
  • Report and document incidents, adverse events and/or near misses according to practice setting guidelines and policies.
  • Providing supervision to LPNs when LPNs scope of practice is exhausted.
  • Providing support to Community Support Workers (CSWs) as appropriate
  • Provides direct nursing care to Clients with a variety of primary care needs including all health complexities with recognition of when it is appropriate to contact the NP/ Physician.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate health equipment safely.
  • Assesses, monitors, recognizes clients needs for substance use withdrawal management ("detox"), post acute withdrawal syndrome and familiar with treatments for sub-categories with substance use disorder(s).
  • RN will complete all required training and education prior to commencement of direct Client care.
  • Provides quality Client care to Clients on voluntary inpatient unit.
  • Facilitates any emergent situation with the medical team.
  • Performs de-escalation and mental health crisis management.
  • Administers medications, provides wound care, monitors Clients for medication efficacy and symptom improvement.
  • Responds to overdose emergencies or any other medical emergencies not limited to CRP/defibrillator use, stroke, seizure, heart attack.
  • Participates in controlled and regular medication administration and reconciliation.
  • Reports and tracks medication issues.
  • Reports any medication or Client care discrepancies to medical manager.
  • Collaborates with contracted pharmacy as needed.
  • Engages with complex cases, participates in case management in collaboration with the medical manager.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Complete and provide proof of completion of registered nursing degree. Must be fully registered and hold active, non-restrictive license/permit with CARNA.
  • Experience with addictions and mental health treatment(s) an asset.
  • Suboxone and Sublocade Course- to be completed with three months of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid and CPR required.
  • Excellent communication skills/interpersonal skills with diverse groups
  • Experience with CIWA-Ar, COWS, OAT therapies, detox, withdrawal, and basic recovery programming an asset.
  • Minimum of one year’s experience in acute care hospital within the last three years, required.
  • 2+ years of experience in medical/surgical nursing
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation, appropriate college scope of care, care standards and must not have restrictions on license.
  • Will be required to obtain a Criminal record Check with Vulnerable sector check upon hiring and every 2 years of employment.
  • All employees are required to complete Naloxone training, along with other mandatory trainings, within their first three months of employme

Schedule
This position follows a 4 on, 4 off rotating schedule, with 12.25-hour day and night shifts. Shift times and scheduling may be adjusted based on the operational needs of the facility.

Opening in 1975, the Walter A. "Slim" Thorpe Recovery Centre was a 2 bed detox centre that began thanks to a collaboration between the Saskatchewan and Alberta governments, local recovery advocates, and the Lloydminster Hospital Board. Today, the organization has grown into a 72-bed facility on the outskirts of Lloydminster AB/SK.
