About the role

PURPOSE

Reporting to the Manager of Wellness Services, the Youth Wellness Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering culturally relevant wellness programs and services aimed at supporting the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of Gwich’in youth. This role focuses on fostering resilience, cultural identity, and positive development through connection to Gwich’in traditions, community, and healthy lifestyles. The coordinator works closely with youth, families, Elders, community organizations, and Gwich’in Tribal Council (GTC) departments to promote holistic wellness and create safe, inclusive spaces for youth engagement. This position contributes to GTC’s strategic priorities in youth empowerment, health promotion, and cultural continuity under the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate youth wellness programs that incorporate Gwich’in culture, values, and traditions.
  • Engage with youth to identify needs, interests, and challenges related to their overall wellness.
  • Facilitate youth workshops, activities, and events that promote mental health, physical activity, life skills, and cultural education.
  • Collaborate with Elders and cultural knowledge keepers to integrate traditional teachings and land-based learning into programs.
  • Provide support, mentorship, and guidance to youth participants in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
  • Work with families, schools, and community partners to create a supportive network for youth wellness.
  • Advocate for youth needs within the GTC and external agencies, ensuring youth voices are heard in decision-making processes.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports on program participation, outcomes, and feedback.
  • Assist in identifying funding opportunities and preparing program proposals related to youth wellness.
  • Stay informed on best practices and emerging trends in Indigenous youth wellness and health promotion.
  • Participate in relevant training, workshops, and community events to enhance professional knowledge and community connections.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or degree in a related field such as Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Health Promotion, Community Development, or Human Services.
  • Relevant certifications or training in Elder care, cultural programming, community health, or counseling.
  • Lived experience working with Indigenous Elders and communities, knowledge of Gwich’in culture and traditions, and demonstrated skills in program coordination can sometimes substitute formal education requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity, respect, and understanding of Indigenous worldviews.
  • Experience in program development, coordination, and reporting.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and ability to travel to communities and land-based program sites as required.
  • Clean Criminal Record Check

Established in 1992, the Gwich'in Tribal Council (GTC) is an Indigenous organization that represents Gwich'in Participants in the Mackenzie-Delta of the Northwest Territories and across Canada. The objectives of the GTC are to:

Protect and preserve the rights, interest and benefits of the Gwich'in under the Constitution Act, Treaty 11 and the Gwich'in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (GCLCA); Overseeing the use, ownership and management of lands, waters and resources in the Gwich'in Settlement Region; Retain, preserve and enhance the traditional and cultural values, customs and language of the Gwich'in in a changing society; Develop and promote economic, social, educational and cultural programs that will enable the Gwich'in to become self-sufficient and full participating members in a global society; and Receive, preserve and enhance the capital and the lands and other benefits transferred to the Gwich'in pursuant to the GCLCA signed on April 22, 1992 in Teetl'it Zheh.

The GTC accomplishes these objectives through various wholly-owned organizations such as the Gwich'in Settlement Corporation and the Gwich'in Development Corporation.
